Summary
Jane Eyre remains a classic of 19th-century English literature and is the most famous and influential novel by Charlotte Bronte.
Published in 1847, one of the most popular of all English novels, the story tells of the rise of a poor orphan girl against overwhelming odds. It is a work of fiction with memorable characters and vivid scenes exploring themes that have as much relevance today as in the time it was written.
British novelist Charlotte Bronte (1816 - 1855) was the eldest of the three famous Bronte sisters whose novels have become standards of English literature.

An enjoyable audiobook
I confess that I had never read this classic before, having perhaps been illogically put off by not liking "Wuthering Heights", and was expecting a rather heavy and overwrought experience, so it was a pleasant surprise that the book was so enjoyable. The characters of the two main protaganists - Rochester and Jane Eyre herself - are not at all as they are perhaps assumed based on film versions. Jane turns out to be feisty and independent-minded and Rochester warmly vulnerable. The story bowls along at a good pace, even though at times it gets bogged down a tad. Best of all is the narration which really brings the book alive.
I might give Wuthering Heights another chance!

The best value on the site
This is an incredible reading. The classic story itself is so vivid and original that it deserves to be hear from that respect, whilst on top the reader, Lucy Scott, gives one of the best, most adapted performances of any audiobook i?ve heard.

wonderful
I'm not a huge Bronte fan but this reading is hugely entertaining, perfect match of reader to writer. Jane's trace of a northern accent is a lovely touch. Gets all the romance and pathos and intelligence and even squeezes some humour out of it. I can't imagine a better version, better than reading the book! A crazy bargain at under 5 pounds too.

Excellent
I read this book as a teenager. Listening to this, brought back all the pleasure I felt then. I can thoroughly recommend this version. Beautifully and sensitively read, I ended up wishing the book was longer!

Brought to life!
This was an absolutely amazing listen. I've never read the book, and this was a delight to listen to. I even played it while I was on the treadmill! The reader's voice was absolutely perfect.

Jane resisted, persisted and persevered…. Reader, she married him!
The description in this novel is lifelike, fascinating and makes you feel all the details like you are at the present living it. The only bit I disliked that as much as Jane was abused and maltreated by the Reeds family, she did hate/dislike her auntie; however, we she grew older, she tolerated the abuse and the condescending treatment from her cousin and the person she loved…and in the end she married him despite the fact he was cold, condescending, abusive, secretive and most of all 20 years older than her!
Also, it is a bit unrealistic that during her life, up until she married when she was 20 year old, she has never encountered male presence to fall in love with or to befriend… only her cousin and Mr Rochester! This part does not bother me much as the part mentioned above.
