About this listen

The JPS TANAKH: The Jewish Bible, audio version, is a recorded version of the JPS TANAKH, the most widely read English translation of the Hebrew, or Jewish, Bible. Produced and recorded for The Jewish Publication Society (JPS) by The Jewish Braille Institute (JBI), this complete, unabridged audio version features over 60 hours of readings by 13 narrators. For help navigating the audio version, download the listeners guide below.

Regarded throughout the English-speaking world as the standard English translation of the Holy Scriptures, the JPS TANAKH has been acclaimed by scholars, rabbis, lay leaders, Jews, and Christians alike. The JPS TANAKH is an entirely original translation of the Holy Scriptures into contemporary English, based on the masoretic (the traditional Hebrew) text. It is the culmination of three decades of collaboration by academic scholars and rabbis, representing the three largest branches of organized Judaism in the United States.

Narrated by Michael Bernstein, Theodore Bikel, Bruce Feiler, Tovah Feldshuh, Norma Fire, Kathy Ford, Lisa Kirsch, Harold Kushner, MD Laufer, Elizabeth London, Francie Anne Riley, Jonathan Roumie, and Marciarose Shestack.

Funding for this recording is made possible through the generosity of Aaron Feingold, M.D., in memory of Esther Feingold, who saw life "with a good eye" (Pirke Avot); Dr. Seymour and June Kessler, in memory of Harry and Rose Kessler, remembered with love; and Norman and Edith Weisfeld, in loving memory of Benjamin and Rose Krumholz, and David Weisfeld.

This is throughly enjoyable and thought provoking. The multiple voices help me to keep focused on the text, as tend to read along with the narrator(s).

That being said, I should like to echo the previous reviews, for the need to have properly labelled chapter titles.

The accompanying PDF fails to synchronise past ‘book 1’, making navigation through the audiobook pretty impossible. So, I reached out to Audible and spoke to one of their fabulous customer advisors. The outcome being that my request has been forwarded to the relevant department, and the department concerned is aiming to provide chapter information TO ALL audiobooks in time.

Here’s hoping Audible is able to pop this one on their to-do list!

Despite the chapter-labelling issue, this is definitely worth the purchase.

Beautiful Audio Narration

Good bible, but one thing let's it down. Extremely difficult to find the verse.you want. Can't understand why all audible bibles don't have an e-book to download with the bible. Would certainly make it so easy to find any verse, and would be worth the extra cost.

Nicely done

At times little overdramatized by the speakers but overall well spoken, clear voices and very interesting to listen to the contents. Highly recommended!

Good rotation of speakers. Highly recommended!

I love to have the whole Tanakh available as a recording, especially to help me study torah when my dyslexia is at its worse. I just wish they labelled the chapters with at least. I know it's likely impossible to do the full line and verse markings but to have to blindly search through to find the beginning of each chapter can be very frustrating.
Clearly Amazon aren't awear that it's not read like you do a novel.

That's my only real complaint though. I really hope that the JPS can make their new Gender Sensitive Tanakh into an audiobook but I have no idea how much it costs them to make these.

Brillint in all ways but the chapter titles

Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?

This is an an excellent and scholarly transaltion of the Tanakh into contemporary English. However the lack of any naming of the 'chapters' makes listening on a Fire tablet a very hit or miss experiences (with far more misses than hits)

What other book might you compare JPS Tanakh to, and why?

Can you repeat the question, and listen to yourself this time!

Which character – as performed by the narrators – was your favourite?

Can you repeat the question, and listen to yourself this time!

If this book were a film would you go see it?

The performances are excellent, but it is difficult to access a particular passage - for example to hear the week's Torah portion

Any additional comments?

An excellent product that is fatally flawed by the very poor numbering/naming of chapters.

Spectacularly flawed
