About this listen

No day is ordinary in a world where technology and magic compete for supremacy.... But no matter which force is winning, in the apocalypse, a sword will always work.

Hugh d'Ambray, Preceptor of the Iron Dogs, Warlord of the Builder of Towers, served only one man. Now his immortal, nearly omnipotent master has cast him aside. Hugh is a shadow of the warrior he was, but when he learns that the Iron Dogs, soldiers who would follow him anywhere, are being hunted down and murdered, he must make a choice: to fade away or to be the leader he was born to be. Hugh knows he must carve a new place for himself and his people, but they have no money, no shelter, and no food, and the necromancers are coming. Fast.

Elara Harper is a creature who should not exist. Her enemies call her Abomination; her people call her White Lady. Tasked with their protection, she's trapped between the magical heavyweights about to collide and plunge the state of Kentucky into a war that humans have no power to stop. Desperate to shield her people and their simple way of life, she would accept help from the devil himself - and Hugh d'Ambray might qualify.

Hugh needs a base; Elara needs soldiers. Both are infamous for betraying their allies, so how can they create a believable alliance to meet the challenge of their enemies?

As the prophet says, "It is better to marry than to burn".

Hugh and Elara may do both.

Great book. I have only recently become a fan of Ilona Andrews. Going to find my next read from her lists.

Fantastic

I was so excited when I found out Ilona Andrews had released a new book. Downloaded it immediately, listened to it nearly non-stop, and loved it! It comes after the Kate Daniels series in terms of chronology, so I’d suggest listening to that first (great series so I’d recommend that one regardless). Different narrator, and although I miss Renee Raudman, Steve West was great too. Now just need to wait forever for the next Ilona Andrews book to be released..

Great book - listen to Kate Daniels series first

If you are a Kate fan, this will be a treat. Great book. The villain was re habilitated. So, so great. Waiting for book 2 is agony. Good thing that rereading or listening never gets old!

I can’t believe Ilona Andrews made me love, and fear for, Hugh! What a rollercoaster. Loved it. Elara is fantastic and a good match for him.

So good!

I have not listened to the Kate Daniels series, so come to the table without any preconceptions of Hugh d’Ambray, former Warlord to Roland, save to say I believe he comes with a lot of baggage. Which is probably why I found it, initially, a little difficult to get my head around some of the characters.

Hugh seems to have fallen from Grace with Roland and has buried himself in an alcoholic stupor. It is the loyalty of his Iron Dogs that drag him from his stupor and start to give him a reason to live once more. They need him to lead and to defend them against those who would hunt them down.

They eventually find a base, a castle which houses Elara, the White Lady, and her people who need an army to defend them. They ally with each other, albeit an uneasy one due to both their betrayals of allies in the past.

As an aside; It is well over a year now since this book was released on Audible and still no second book in sight? I find it really frustrating when authors just leave people hanging. Perhaps Ilona should take leaf out of Michael Sullivan's book and just get on with it.

Interesting!

I love Ilona Andrews stories so I’m biased, but this is book 5* read and a 6* audible. The narrator is superb. IA achieved what I thought was impossible and wrote a great redemption story turning Hugh into a rough diamond hero. Alara is an amazing heroine, strong and ruthless but vulnerable enough to be likeable. The narrator portrayed this wonderfully. I can’t wait to hear the next in the series.

Fabulous fabulous fabulous
