About this listen

When Jamie Maslin decides to hitchhike the entire length of the Silk Road, he decides to travel first and plan later. Then, unexpectedly stranded in Iran - a country he's only read about in newspapers - he wonders whether he'll make it out alive.

After crossing the border on foot from Turkey, Maslin finds himself suddenly plunged into the subversive, contradictory world of Iranian subculture, where he is embraced by locals who are happy to show him the true Iran as they see it - where tourists are treated like royalty, where cab drivers shout abuse at Mullahs from their car windows, where unmarried men and women mingle in Western clothes at secret parties, and where cans of whisky (the possession of which is punishable by lashings) are readily available on the black market.

This is the charming and astonishing account of one Westerner's life-altering rambles across Iran that illustrates first-hand the attitudes and aspirations of a nation in flux.

Jamie Maslin's real firsthand account of Iran will change the way you think about the Middle East. In this piece of fast-paced travel writing, Maslin tells about an Iran often left out of traditional American media depictions. Filled with keen insights and uncommon perspectives, this is a must for anyone interested in the zeitgeist and subcultures of Iran. Stephen Hoye's performance relays descriptions of foreign place and foreign people in a relatable way, while still alluding to the danger that lurks around every corner of this often-hostile land.

Highly recommend! I listened to this over a few days while driving round delivering with Uber. This book is filled with great stories of adventure and a fascinating perspective on an unfairly demonised culture. Great exposition!

Amazing story, brilliantly narrated, and very funny

Hadn't heard of this book but took a punt and I'm really happy I did. It's actually very informative and funny as hell, I loved it.
Thanks for writing it

It was a nice experience hearing about my own country this way , certainly leaned a few new things myself . Shame the situation then and now is different.
My only critique is pronunciation of some Persian names which could be better . The cooling towed of Yazd are better pronounced as Bud Gear 🙂.

Delightful

This was one of the best books that I ever read on the subject of travel writing about Iran.

The story was perfect; so was the narration.
The picture it brings to mind of contemporary Iran is so compelling and so beautiful you wouldn’t want to to put the book down before you have finished it.

The geography, the atmosphere, the people, the culture, you name it; so much has been squeezed into the book, and yet it is so refreshing and so light.

Simply said; it is a miracle of a book.

Thank you, all who were involved in the production of this beautiful gem.

One of the Best Books of my Life!

Loved the way Jamie was able to objectively portray his travels in the much demonised Axis of Evil state of Iran. Makes me want to get on the next plane there.

Breadth of fresh air

A humourous and delightful account of the author's travels through Iran, this book shines a new light on the wonderful people and way of life which is hard to imagine in the West.

Laugh out loud book

Great story with loud out loud moments, an interesting story and excellent writing. I loved the naration, if you're not sure, bare with it for the first chapter - I wish he'd narrate every book.
