Summary

Having saved humanity from an invading alien armada, Ian Lotus finds himself not rewarded but once again on the run - struggling to stay one step ahead of a galactic government intent on his capture.

However, you don't live as long as Lotus has - well beyond the lifespan of a normal human being - without picking up a trick or two, and Lotus is savvier than most. Catching him won't be easy. Still, his pursuers have a powerful incentive: their quarry is in possession of secrets that could reshape mankind's destiny - in particular, the fact that he's the only person capable of controlling the protective halo of weaponry known as the Chronos Ring, which is humanity's first and last line of defense against its enemies throughout the cosmos.

But human agents aren't all Lotus has to worry about. Also hot on his heels is an army of genetically-engineered horrors controlled by an exiled despot from an alternate dimension, who sees Lotus - and in particular, the Ring - as the pathway for both a return to power and the subjugation of humanity. It's up to Lotus to find a way to stop this menace, before the entire human race is enslaved.

An Engaging Story

It's good to see the return of Ian as he soon finds out being long lived isn't always a good thing.
Meeting family also turns into a greater problem as he soon finds that a lot more people than he thought need his help.
An engaging story and a great narration as always.

Great!!!

I really enjoyed this story, the action was fast paced, the characters were likeable and the narrator did a great job of bring this world to life.

I jumped straight into book 2 but I didn't feel lost or confused with the story line at any point, although I will be going back to book one!

Please note that I was given a free copy of this audiobook to provide a non-biased review

There was no way this was going to end well

Ian Lotus may be very human but he was certainly no ordinary man. For a start, no one knew how long he'd been alive - was it mere centuries, or even longer? - during which time he'd amassed an unknowable fortune and had time to develop skills far beyond that of the shorter lived person. He'd built the Chromosome Ring, the defensive shield surrounding the inhabited planets and to which only he had the key. And recently he had been recognised as the son of a near godlike alien.

But he was created by men in authority over the League of Planets and now also hated by his newly discovered younger half brother. Life was about to become difficult for Ian, following his escape from the holding planet on which he and his protector (gift from dad) on which they had been imprisoned.

This is a fun science fictional romp, well narrated by Mikael Naramore whose reading is pace perfect, well modulated and read with understanding. His voicings of all the characters is good, too, clearly differentiating them with suitable tones. Although the second in the series, it is possible to fully enjoy this tale without any knowledge of book one as all that is needed is given here. Not a serious book, raising no thought provoking issues, but it is a jolly good frolic with fights, near indestructible Cyrilllian robots, interplanetary travel (of the beam-me-up-Scottie kind), ambush and intrigue, betrayal and help from an unexpected course. Oh, and lots more.
Like I said, good fun.

I loved it!

The book was slow to start with but as the story progressed it got better. I have read other books by this author, so I was not disappointed with this one.

If you have read his other books then certain things stick out and are typical Hardman work. I noticed he tends to use somethings in all his books, like, the hero getting out of difficult situations majority of the time. You keep thinking he can't get out of this situation and the author comes up with something that saves the hero. I felt that the character seemed to be really lucky in how he manages to get out of situations however this is a fantasy and anything goes.
I love how the author always comes up with something. That is one of the reason I kept reading this book, just so I can find out how he manages to get the character out of the predicament that they are in.
I love the plot and I found some areas that are predictable and others that were not.

I love this narrator. I have listened to other books that he has narratored and I believe he is suited for this type of genre. He give the story suspense, made the characters more believeable and is able to voice multiple characters. I would highly recommend listening to other books he has narrated.

I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review.

Excellent !!!

What a beautiful story, truly out of nowhere the Chronos Ring series appeared and amazed me.
The author Earl E. Hardman wrote both books beautifully and left an opening for a continuation which I really hope will come because I want more of this excellent story !
Perfect narration by Mikael Naramore .
I got nothing bad to say here.
