I thoroughly enjoyed this collection of Incredible Science Fiction stories, ably narrated by the author – Andrew G Gibson. There’s something for every Sci-Fi lover here. And although some were written as far back as the 1950s, none of them appear dated in any way. Gibson provides an interesting Introduction to the book, and then a very useful prologue to each story, whetting your appetite for the potpourri of stories that follow - and you won’t be disappointed. Having a mathematics background, ‘Ye of Little Faith’ by Rog Phillips appealed to me right from the start. This story represents the gold standard of not just Sci-Fi, but creative writing in general.

After that, we go straight into another wonderful story – ‘The Tunnel Under the World’ by Frederick Pohl. Loved it straight way – the sort of fiction I would like to write. Other standout stories for me were: ‘Little Boy’ by Jerome Bixby; Wainer by Michael Shaara (a beautiful story which absorbs you from the first sentence to the last); ‘Of all Possible Worlds (Michael Tenn); The Worshippers by Damon Knight; and Gibson’s own story, ‘Anatomy of Fear’, which fits in seamlessly with the other great writers in this collection. All in all, this is certainly the best anthology of Sci-Fi stories I have listened to.

Andrew Gibson both curates and narrates a selection of thirteen science fiction short stories from the past,f including one of his own. All are interesting, or curious, and sufficiently substantial to allow the reader time to become involved. They are as follows:

v) Alan E Nourse: Brightside Crossing
vi) Harry Neal: Little Boy

ix) William Tenn: Of all possible Worlds
X) James Blick: To pay the Piper
xi) Andrew G.Gibson: The Anatomy of Fear
xii) Damon Knight: Worshippers
xiii) Rog.Phillips: The Gallery.

My personal favourite is the last one, The Gallery, as much because of the delicious guest narration by Andrew Gibson's brother, James. He twists himself into the story perfectly balancing an emotional joy with each sentence and fine individual voicing for every character. Indeed, it is a pity that James does not narrate all of the stories as several are less than showcased by Andrew Gibson's rather uneventful reading which tends to meld into a mono level despite being otherwise well read. In addition there are occasional editing glitches where brief repetitions occur. The listener's attention can easily wander, something definitely not possible with The Gallery performance. And this is unfortunate as each story is vibrantly now, despite sometimes being decades old.

My thanks to the rights holder of this excellent collection of recovered little gems of science fiction, who, at my request, freely gifted me with a complimentary copy via Audiobook Boom. Well worth reading for the very last story alone, although all have unique twists and a very personal approach. Fine writing. Recommended.
