Summary

Someone's getting married. Someone's getting murdered.

In a dark, dark wood

Nora hasn't seen Clare for 10 years. Not since Nora walked out of school one day and never went back.

There was a dark, dark house

Until, out of the blue, an invitation to Clare’s hen do arrives. Is this a chance for Nora to finally put her past behind her?

And in the dark, dark house, there was a dark, dark room

But something goes wrong. Very wrong.

And in the dark, dark room....

Some things can’t stay secret forever.

Predictable but well constructed

Without spoilers, I would say that The eventual outcome is pretty obvious from quite early on, but it’s nevertheless well constructed and compellingly structured

Love the writing style and suspense is immense

Writing is captivating and immerses into the story from page one. Suspense right till the end, yes it is easy to speculate who was the bad guy, but writing style makes it all exciting. Also the narrator has a very beautiful tone of voice and the whole story is a pleasure to listen to.

Hen Do!

This novel made me realise why I have avoided Hen Do’s all my life. A bit like an Agatha Christie, all protagonists are herded together in a remote Northumbrian manor with no access to communication apart from a dodgy outside line and a feeble mobile signal. Few of them have anything in common except some sort of relationship with the fortunate bride-to-be. Who will be the victim and who will be the murderer? No spoilers here though.

The book is carefully crafted and although slow to get going I was utterly gripped at the end. A splendid performance by Imogen Church brought the book to life. Altogether well worth the effort.

Meh

I found it a little bit meh. it was ok, but I wasn't desperate to hear the next chapter. I found the whole idea of everyone being so upset about something that happened when they were sixteen a tad ridiculous (not a spoiler - it comes up pretty soon in the story), and I kept waiting for a twist that never came.

okay but found obsession with teen boyfriend trite

Narration good and fairly intriguing story. However characters seem a bit characturist and obsession of lead character with teen sweetheart seems a bit infantile. Not her best book but still good.

Very good!

Slowish start but an excellent listen. Couldn't put it down. Not read any of Ruth Ware's books before but I will in the future.
