ما هي الحرية؟ سؤالٌ شائك يدور في عقل أمينة التي لم تعرف معنى الحرية يومًا ما؛ فقد تولَّت عمتها تربيتها بعد انفصال والديها و ذاقت أصناف الذلّ والعذاب معها؛ فكانت عمتها تضربها إذا ما خرجت او تأخّرت أو رفعت صوتها، كانت تشعر بأنّها هي وعمتها تحت سطوة الجلّاد الذكر الذي أعطاه المجتمع كامل الحرية وحرم المرأة منها فتقرِّر التمرَّد على الواقع وتصرخ بأعلى صوتها تحت الضّرب: أنا حرة!
