Amante della buona tavola e del vino, non è più giovanissimo, ha un passato sentimentale triste e un presente dove l'amore ha i lineamenti irregolari e il temperamento brusco di Angela, temibile e focosa avvocatessa. È alle prese con due morti misteriose: due anziani fratelli, con un fosco passato di attività ai tempi del fascismo e di Salò, vengono uccisi. Uno precipita dalla finestra di un ospedale dove svolgeva una sorta di assistenza volontaria, l'altro, dopo essere apparentemente svanito nel fiume con la sua chiatta, viene ripescato cadavere nelle acque del Po.
