Summary

Hush Money tells a story that is all too familiar to Black people across the globe with the case study of Ebony, a young Black woman who was living in poverty, struggling financially, and finding it hard to make ends meet. It describes how she obtained a job with an organization, after years of working dead end jobs, that put her one step closer to living the American dream. But it also describes how that dream turned into a nightmare when she became a victim of systemic racism in her workplace, was stripped of all dignity, confidence and strength, and was left with three choices: suffering in silence to keep her job, resigning to keep her sanity, or waiting to be unjustly fired.

Hush Money also tells a story of triumph that breaks down the strategy Ebony used after years of suffering that not only proved systemic racism in her workplace, but also allowed her to keep her job and receive a six-figure settlement from her employer, among other things, to buy her silence.

Black women's experiences - often unimagineable

The corporate world today is too often made up of people who have been happy to trample on others to get to the top. People of all genders and all ethnicities. However there is a line that get's crossed when it get's to women, and another for women of colour. Some people find it hard to see us equitably and their unsavoury instincts get triggered. This book documents the impact that behaviour can have, and what it takes to be able to carve a path for the next generation - if burnout and breakdown doesn't get you first. Thank you for adding to the body of literature that addresses this often sweet under the carpet issue

Captivating from start to finish

This was an amazing listen and had me hooked from the first few minutes. It is an emotionally difficult listen due to the distress experienced by the protagonist who shows what it means to “take the higher ground” and face workplace racist bullying, harassment and discrimination with dignity, integrity and intelligence. The book is more than a novel, it is a roadmap for all minority groups in how to navigate and survive in the workplace. The narration is excellent throughout and is engaging from start to finish!

Powerful, Emotional and Enthralling

This book was one of the best books I have listened to in the last 2 years. I could identify with all the emotions and experiences.
I felt empathy with the main character in a way that was disturbingly real.
There was a lot of food for thought.

A must read for GMH individuals

Loved every word. I read it at a stretch. A must read for any one who feels they might be discriminated against at work. The racial literacy and corporate literacy showed in this book can't and is not taught in school. Thank you for sharing your story. You are very brave.
