About this listen

'This book is brilliant. Utterly, utterly brilliant' Jeremy Clarkson

'F--king brilliant' Sarah Knight

READ FOR YOU BY CRITICALLY ACCLAIMED COMIC AND HUMAN NISH KUMAR, THIS IS AN EXHILARATING JOURNEY THROUGH THE MOST CREATIVE AND CATASTROPHIC F--K-UPS OF HUMAN HISTORY.

In the seventy thousand years that modern human beings have walked this earth, we've come a long way. Art, science, culture, trade - on the evolutionary food chain, we're real winners. But, frankly, it's not exactly been plain sailing, and sometimes - just occasionally - we've managed to really, truly, quite unbelievably f--k things up.

From Chairman Mao's Four Pests Campaign, to the American Dustbowl; from the Austrian army attacking itself one drunken night, to the world's leading superpower electing a reality TV mogul as President... it's pretty safe to say that, as a species, we haven't exactly grown wiser with age.

So, next time you think you've really f--ked up, this book will remind you: it could be so much worse...

Although the content is interesting and entertaining in its own right, the writing style truly makes it a fun read. On top of that the narration compliments the style extremely well. I've already added Phillips' next book to my wishlist, and I hope Kumar narrates it again!

Extremely engaging and interesting

This book is a hilarious skim over of where humans have gone wrong. Well read by Nish Kumar!

Excellent listen

Well, how many ways can you think of, on how to F*** it up? This book covers some of the big ones. A warning to those who have just the right answer to that nagging problem. No good deed goes unpunished and all that, although those punished may not have anything to do with anything.

Sumed up in a word Hubris

Extremely entertaining and depressing in equal measure. Do you enjoy history, quirky stories, and social sciences? Well, this could be the book for you. As one would expect from a former Buzzfeed writer, ‘Humans’ has is written in a very informal, conversational style. Tom Phillips packs his book with well researched eclectic examples from human history of our desire to make disastrous mistakes. He presents these in no particular order, and turns the oft-used narrative upside down. By touching upon only the critical elements needed to construct the mental final picture of each historical event, he enriches the text by adding lots of examples to send a compelling message in each chapter. Nish Kumar narrated, which helped to convey the grim sarcastic humour. Whether we learn from these errors or not is a different matter entirely and as this book illustrates, it's not always as easy or black and white as it seems.

Loads of facts and history but very funny too

Very informative and entertaining book. Totally worth a buy. The narrator is quite good if a bit overexcited at times. This book, to me, is a bonkers flip side to Sapiens by Yuval Noah Harari (another must-read).defiantly worth your time and a few pounds.

Excellent book

Nish Kumar's narration makes this a very enjoyable journey through the ages. One genuinely shouldn't be laughing out loud at how we've f*cked up this planet and continue to do so but there are some bits you can afford a hearty laugh without any guilt.

An easy and thought provoking listen.

Great book. Interesting and thought provoking stories that are well written and excellently narrated. So well narrated in fact that I was glad I didn't have the time to read it my self

This title is simply fantastic, and the first audiobook that I have ever gone back to listen over. The storytelling throughout each chapter is easy to follow with comedic moments every couple of paragraphs. Most importantly, I took so many facts away from it, admittedly they are facts that I will never have a need for but it keeps my parents happy to know that my knowledge bank is still growing! The narrator can get a little over excited at times, I found myself telling him to 'chill out' from time to time, particularly when he was narrating a part around Hitler... Overall, a fantastic listen and very much worth the 6 and a half hours of anyone's time.

Taught me more than school..
