About this listen

Stanley Yelnats' family has a history of bad luck, so when a miscarriage of justice sends him to Camp Green Lake Juvenile Detention Centre (which isn't green and doesn't have a lake), he is not surprised.

Every day he and the other inmates are told to dig a hole, five feet wide by five feet deep, reporting anything they find. The evil warden claims that it is character building, but this is a lie, and Stanley must dig up the truth.

Wonderfully inventive, compelling and hilarious, Louis Sachar has created a masterpiece.

Critic reviews

" Holes is one of those instant classics that adults, as well as children over eight, will thoroughly enjoy. Sachar has created something quite different from JK Rowling or Philip Pullman, but no less enchanting." ( Independent on Sunday)
"If you want a witty, moving listen that grabs you and never lets up, look no further than Holes." ( The Daily Telegraph)

The narrator does a great job of conveying the different boys' personalities.
The pace of the book is really well weighted for the story - when we watched the film after having finished the audiobook, the film felt too rushed !

Fantastic narration. Fun story.

Very well narrated and not a bad old yarn. probably more suited to teen audiences, stories with too many far fetched coincidences tend to disappoint and this book fell into that trap

me and my roommate listed to this audio and both felt nostalgic listening to it. I remember reading it as children at school as part of English lessons. never thought I'd listen to it all these years later. Still as good as back then.
