About this listen
A much loved science-fiction classic, this entertaining intergalactic adventure has a lot going for it - including narration by British comedian Stephen Fry. Adams displays his talents for a creating a whole new world in this first of five audiobooks in the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy series. Packed with brilliant humour, extraordinary characters and a highly original storyline, it's no wonder that this novel is a favourite of so many.
One Thursday lunchtime the Earth gets unexpectedly demolished to make way for a new hyperspace bypass. For Arthur Dent, who has only just had his house demolished that morning, this seems already to be more than he can cope with. Sadly, however, the weekend has only just begun, and the Galaxy is a very strange and startling place.

Critic reviews
'One of the greatest achievements in comedy. A work of staggering genius' - David Walliams
'By turns authoritative as the narrator, bemused as Arthur Dent, deadpan as Ford Prefect and manic as Zaphod Beeblebrox, he [Stephen Fry] makes an altogether appropriate reader' - The Times
'Master of comedy Stephen Fry delivers a brilliant audiobook narration' - Editor Review
'He had almost a Wodehousian style and some of his phrases and jokes entered our language. He changed the way people spoke' - Stephen Fry

Americanised
Great story but shame it’s been translated into American English. Torch to flashlight and biro to ballpoint etc.

Why the americanisms?
Nothing against american terminology but why change the original text? It's unnecessary.
And I do like Stephen Fry's narration but give the radio shows a try, the characters really come to life there.

Amazing story and good narrator.
Love the story, so sarcastic. This is way beyond a simple sci-fi, and i am amused to see how it reflects the reality.

Stephen Fry, Adams' witty comic relief. Perfect.
Just get it, get a good dose of your favorite hot beverage and enjoy this tension lifting story. Stephen fry's voice acting is so pleasant that he could simply repeat the alphabet and it would make anyone's inner child give a comforted smile, and when he's reading Douglas Adams' classic, the witty and very British comedic space-opera is a well needed relief during times of seriousness, argument, black and white thinking and resentments. This will likely make you quite happy for some amount of time.

A classic for good reasons. A most enjoyable read.
Great story written with irrelevant humour and intelligence. Loved the characters and observations about life in general.

Great writing, good reading
Out of all the Stephen Fry readings I've listened to, this one was the worst and it was still amazing.

Truly Wonderful!
Marvelous!. Douglas Adams is so inventive but his highest flights of fantasy are grounded in real science and so witty. Quotes of his keep ringing in my head, like Q - What's wrong with being drunk, A- Ask a glass of water!

Brilliant
I read this series a few years ago, but it's somewhat more magnificent when it's being read to you at night by Steven fry. Almost like being a child again. It's wonderful.
