Summary
A gripping psychological thriller from the bestselling author of I Am Watching You. The perfect family? Or the perfect lie?
It’s their daughter’s graduation and Rachel and Ed Hartley are expecting it to be one of their family’s happiest days. But when she stumbles and falls on stage during the ceremony, a beautiful moment turns to chaos: Gemma has been shot, and just like that, she’s fighting for her life.
PI Matthew Hill is one of the first on the scene. A cryptic message Gemma received earlier in the day suggests someone close to her was about to be exposed. But who? As Matthew starts to investigate, he finds more and more layers obscuring the truth. He even begins to suspect the Hartleys are hiding something big - from him and from each other.
While Gemma lies in hospital in a coma, her would-be killer is still out there. Can Matthew unravel the family’s secrets before the attacker strikes again?
Critic reviews
“Intriguing. Different. I raced through it beyond my usual ‘lights-out’ time. You simply HAVE to read to the end to find out what happens.”—Jane Corry, Sunday Times bestselling author
“Her Perfect Family is a thrilling ride, a finely-crafted mystery that begins with a terrible act of violence, a mother’s worst nightmare. I was gripped from the first page…I loved it!”—Melanie Golding, bestselling author of Little Darlings

A struggle to finish
I struggled to finish this one. Nothing stood out. The story was OK although the ending seemed rushed. I am not a fan of accentless voices, in this case the narrator made the daughter and mother just sound irritating.

Another hit for Teresa Driscoll
I always get Teresa Driscoll book on audible, I had to wait ages to listen to it and wasn't disappointed.
Personally the performance was a bit of a let down I couldn't get used to Steve's voice, especially when he was narrating Amelie. His other characters where fine.
The basis of the story was a young girl Gemma getting shot at her graduation ceremony. Over the course of the book various people are introduced with very different motives. Each chapter is a different character, the private investigator, the mother, the father, the daughter and mystery person. Each chapter is properly introduced so you can follow exactly what's happening without confusion.
There was a lot of drip fed information through Gemma's "diary" and I didn't work out who the shooter was before it was revealed which is always exciting.
It was also an interesting look into family dynamics and childhood trauma and slight touch on mental health that may be a trigger warning for some. Also the shooting should be a trigger warning as I was in tears. I very rarely cry at a book but that scene had me in floods.
Huge thank you to Teresa Driscoll for another great read (listen).

Not a bad story but make narrator doing female characters was painful
Make narrator doing make characters fine, same male narrator doing female characters definitely not fine - to the point of almost making me abandon the listen half way through so irritating was it. Fortunately the story was good enough to keep me listening - not outstanding but not bad

*Behind The Facade*
This was supposed to be a perfect day Rachel and Ed Hartley are attending their daughter Gemma’s graduation ceremony. But as Gemma approaches the stage there is a loud bang and she falls.
The reason she falls soon becomes apparent and panic ensues.
In another part of the town is ex cop turn PI Matthew Hill is out with his family and seeing the panic he asks his family to leave the town and he is first on the scene. He calls DI Mel Saunders who he knows well and she is on her way.
As Matthew and Mel try to get to the bottom of the case they are about to open a can of worms that Ed and Rachel never wanted to reveal, some secrets they have never even revealed to themselves.
Matthew is walking a fine line trying to balance this case and appease his family.
Teresa Driscoll makes you think (well maybe it was just me) that the villain of the story could be one person but the real culprit who was on my radar was hiding in plain sight behind a facade
