Elle a eu douze ans cette année ; elle porte ses cheveux noirs tressés en deux grosses nattes qui battent l'air autour d'elle chaque fois qu'elle tourne la tête un peu brusquement, ce qui arrive souvent car elle n'a rien perdu de sa vivacité et ses yeux sont toujours aussi francs.
Aujourd'hui, elle est un peu inquiète. Pourra-t-elle revenir l'année prochaine, ou bien, comme les fillettes du village, devra-t-elle descendre à Ragaz pour entrer en service ? Le grand-père et le docteur n'ont jamais parlé devant elle de son avenir.
