 "Buy my stepfather's ghost, read the e-mail." So Jude did. He bought it, in the shape of the dead man's suit, delivered in a heart-shaped box, because he wanted it - because his fans ate up that kind of story. It was perfect for his collection: the genuine skulls and the bones, the real honest-to-God snuff movie, the occult books, and all the rest of the paraphernalia that goes along with his kind of hard/goth rock.

But the rest of his collection doesn't make the house feel cold. The bones don't make the dogs bark; the movie doesn't make Jude feel as if he's being watched. And none of the artifacts bring a vengeful old ghost with black scribbles over his eyes out of the shadows to chase Jude out of his home, and make him run for his life....

Unlike other people I read Joe hills comics unaware he was the son of Stephen King. I like both but i like more fantasy and humour in my books. This is more like his fathers books than his comics are but i still thoroughly enjoyed it. It is genuinely scary is some places and hats off to the narrator for that. Looking forward to Horns as it sounds more like his comic work.

Having read the book I still greatly enjoyed the audio book. Very well narrated. This is a top notch modern day ghost story and thriller. Great book.

I got it after listening to "save the cat! Writes a novel" it was part of the samples and break down, it helps a lot as research considering that it's flow went so smoothly. The prose is great as well.

I was recommended this as a scary story by an online top 10 list. But I would say that this is more of a thriller than a horror.

This book had me gripped from the beginning. Like his father, Hill writes in a way that really lets you get to know his characters, and care for them, and the narrator really brings them to life with his voice acting. One of the best performances I’ve heard. This is my first Joe Hill book, but it certainly seems that he can write a better ending than his father - the story was coherent and gripping throughout. It was a very interesting idea, buying a ghost, and the story twists and turns and takes you with it for the ride. Definitely worth a read for any horror fan.

The narrator brought the whole story to life so very well. It was difficult to put down, and was an excellent story. It could have been true, I just hope it wasn’t.

Good story, great performance, unfortunately the music intersecting the chapters is awful why anyone would put such a horrible price of music between the chapters is beyond me. somebody might like the music but I thought it took away from the story telling. Overall I liked it

After NOS4R2 I was really looking forward to this story. Unfortunately it failed to deliver its not a bad story just not quite a gripping one. The performance is a little flat but well read.

This story was well written and well paced. However, I didn't feel any connection with the characters at all; this is something I find essential in order to enjoy horror. I have to hand it to Hill though, the book is perfectly paced - beautifully so - and the descriptive narrative is excellent. I just couldn't connect with the characters and that really detracted from the overall story for me. A placid 3 stars I'm afraid.
