Summary

In this second installment of Persson's trilogy of police procedurals featuring the 'small, fat and primitive' Evert Bäckström, the grand master's most appallingly repulsive (and funniest) character is finally given his 15 minutes of fame by way of his patented combination of laziness, luck and an unbelievable sense of timing.

A seemingly ordinary murder puzzles Bäckström, who is struggling with strict orders from his doctor to lead a healthier life. His gut feeling proves him right: within days his team has another murder linked to the first on their hands and reports of alleged ties to a Securicor heist gone out of control, killing two.

The nation needs a hero, and the newly appointed head of the Västerort police force, Anna Holt, needs somebody to kill the dragon for her. Who better to pay heed to the task than Evert Bäckström: self-sufficient, ostentatious, devoid of morals, Hawaiian shirt-clad and, latterly, armed?

Story ok, not the narrator

Please Audible, please find another voice actor !

The stories are quite good, however the narrator not only uses a slight accent to many characters, but also gives the protagonist a gravelly and hoarse voice, which would fit an elderly person. He also unfortunately applies that same voice for many characters from time to time. This makes it difficult to differentiate between characters, that it is necessary to go back and listen to the dialogues again.

- Failure from narrator to apply sarcasm which is integral to the main character who takes any opportunities to vent al bitter disdain towards anything and anyone, whether in his head or face to face.

- Failure from narrator to reflect a variety of emotions when demonstrating whispering, happiness, annoyance, etc.

The voice used for the narration itself is ok though, in the background even though occasionally it sounds more like the voice of the previous character - unfortunately too common in many audible recordings.

Accent given to characters: many narrators use what they think is a 'Nordic accent' when reading books written by nordic writers, yet characters in books for example written by Italian authors are not given an Italian accent, and some characters are given a 'foreign' accent to represent their birth country and their expat status.

Story : 3 stars only as i couldn't get fully into the story. I went back a few time, however it would have taken twice as long to finish the story and could n't bear that monotonous gravel-voice.

This was my 2nd audible book from that author and will be my last until Audible decides to find a proper narrator.

what a waste of money!

the lead character is three dimensional, mysogynis, racist and foul mouthed. All the rest are inconsequential and pale. storyline could have been ok but nothing sparked a reason to finish. Nordi noir in need of a reverse publication
