About this listen
‘The best romantic comedy I've read since The Hating Game’
Naomi and Luca have been pen-pals since fifth-grade. Well, more like bitter rivals caught in an epic battle of insults and verbal jousting…
But what starts as a hilarious chain of hate filled letters, slowly develops into a friendship spanning coasts and years. That is until one day, years later, when the letters suddenly stop.
It’s been two years since Naomi last heard from Luca. Two years since the letter that changed everything.
But when a new envelope turns up out of the blue at her desk at the local news station, Naomi is determined not to let Luca have the final word.

This was an interesting one to review. I really enjoyed the book and it was obvious.
But I don't like that Naomi was tricked into sleeping with the guy she had known all along. I also didn't like that she was made to feel like she had been lying to him because she was trying to find her pen pal. I don't think she was in the wrong there, only if her and her neighbour were actually together in a proper relationship should she have told him about this.
Also, a bit odd with Lucas dad too.
But, this was an easy one to read and an ok girly read.

The narrative, largely driven by their letters, initially entertains with its clever exchanges and sharp banter. However, the plot encounters hurdles as it progresses. The storyline, while engaging at times, becomes somewhat lackluster as deeper emotional themes are introduced without sufficient development. Furthermore, Naomi is depicted with a circle of friends who fail to add the necessary depth to her personal journey, diminishing the story's impact.
Luca's character, in particular, would have benefitted greatly from additional depth and perspective. His actions, which tread into overly persistent territory, could have been better understood, or perhaps even sympathized with, had there been a dual narration that included his point of view. The use of a male narrator for Luca’s segments would have enriched the narrative, offering a balance and insight that the book sorely needs, especially when addressing the more serious undertones that emerge.
The revival of their communication after a mysterious two-year silence introduces a new dynamic, yet the resolution feels somewhat rushed and underexplored. Marchetti's narrative shines when it focuses on the cleverness of the exchanges but seems to struggle with the transition into more serious, emotional territory.
Overall, while "Hate Mail" offers moments of enjoyable literary banter and an intriguing premise, it falls short of its potential due to the one-sided narrative and lack of a compelling male voice for Luca. A dual POV approach with distinct narrators could have significantly elevated the depth and engagement of this epistolary novel.
