Summary

The first book in Bernard Cornwell’s bestselling GRAIL QUEST series, in a bright and bold repackage.

The year is 1342. The English, led by Edward III, are laying waste to the French countryside. The army may be led by the King, but it is the archers, the common men, who are England’s secret weapon. The French know them as Harlequins.

Thomas of Hookton is one of these archers. But he is also on a personal mission: to avenge his father’s death and retrieve a stolen relic. Thomas begins a quest that will lead him through fields smeared with the smoke of fires set by the rampaging English, until at last the two armies face each other on a hillside near the village of Crécy.

Good story, bad editing

Great story but it's badly edited. Many sentences at the start of new chapters are clipped short, starting mid sentence.

I got through this story in a week. I just couldn't stop listening and wanting to know what happened next.
I think I'm a bit in love with Thomas.
Bernard Cromwell is fast becoming my favourite author.

Good story

Usual good well written Bernard Cornwell yarn based on historic reference including the squalor and inequality of war.

A complex weave

The story is quite complex but incredibly adroit in it's handling of many story lines. The way in which the characters cross the lines between the French and the English is particularly engrossing.

One thing that I have noticed

Across a range of the author Cornwell books, he uses the word “bastard” a lot to a point it’s insufferable, and no longer even funny. It’s makes a lot of his books sound similar. I enjoyed this book, it’s good.
