Summary
A deluge has flooded the high ground near Hanging Falls - but heavy rains aren't the only menace descending on Timber Creek. While on a scouting mission to pinpoint trail damage, officer Mattie Cobb and her K-9 partner, Robo, stumble upon a body floating at the edge of a lake. Robo catches human scent, which leads to an enigmatic forest-dweller who quickly becomes suspect number one.
With help from veterinarian Cole Walker, Mattie identifies the victim and discovers an odd religious cult whose dress and manners harken back to the 19th century. As the list of suspects grows, an unexpected visit from members of Mattie's long-lost family sheds new light on her childhood as they help her piece together details of the fateful night when she was abducted at age two.
The tangled threads of the investigation and family dynamics begin to intertwine, but darkness threatens to claim a new victim before Mattie and Robo can track down the killers.

New ideas again
Where on earth does the author get her ideas from? Whilst continuing the story she still manages to send you off in different directions

The least enjoyable
This one was far more cliched than the others. One thing to take away from all the books, though is, if you’re thinking of visiting, Timbercreek, don’t!

A good mystery story but very predictable!
Nancy Wu's performance is wonderful and I love her narration. Margaret Mizushima's writing is great but unfortunately she has a lot of setup for something that isn't really that complicated, I've said in a previous review of the book before this that her stories are not cozy mysteries, they don't hit the right amount of fun and funny to emotional and dark. These tend to be quite dark all the time with a bit of light-heartedness. I love the characters but after a while Mattie starts to do my head in. The other thing that actually pissed me off with this book was the first half with Coles daughter acting like a little mood cow. I was frankly very unimpressed and annoyed. I can appreciate that Margaret Mizushima is trying to make this a procedural series with the police doing their thing. But after 5-6 books I don't think I've laughed once? I would like to see Margaret mix it up a bit and do something a bit different, where there is no murders in the little town, but a 411 style mystery with strange lights in the forest and Cole and his children land up having fun with Mattie while speculating what is going on! This story was interesting and intriguing, but very predictable I know who did it very quickly and to be honest I had a thought about what could of been an alternative that I thought would of been an original slant to this type of setup. It was quite creepy but in the wrong way, at one point I did feel a bit uncomfortable but I am happy to say it wasn't as creepy as I thought it was going to be... Also I want to see Robo have a bit more fun, I know he is a highly trained professional dog, but he is a dog, and dogs are awesome and I would like to see him get annoyed with Mattie and get his own back on her by eating her dinner or when she goes to bath him he runs off and hides.

A placeholder
Mizushima is a competent mid- range writer, ideal for when you've had a run of heavier or more complex listening and just want something less taxing and reasonably entertaining while you catch up on the chores.
Books 5 & 6 in this series have been underwhelming, so I hope the final two will be more interesting. There comes a point in any series when it's time for the author to stop dumping backstory about previous events/character observations/personal issues/outdated theories about dog training etc., and just get on with providing a decently plotted story. The most interesting scene in this instalment was the very last one. I just hope it's the setup for a good final denouement. Fingers crossed!
