Nella Grande Guerra l'Italia compie uno sforzo organizzativo, industriale e umano sbalorditivo per un Paese così debole. Nel mondo, però, di quegli anni tutti ricordano un unico episodio, un episodio il cui nome ha assunto un valore etimologico strettamente collegato all'umiliazione: Caporetto.
Ma di questo non possiamo incolpare gli altri; in quell'occasione è emersa l'altra faccia dell'Italia, un Paese sospeso fra modernità e arretratezza. Inefficienza, retorica, irresponsabilità della classe dirigente: retaggi da cui forse non siamo mai riusciti a liberarci.
