About this listen

The classic Charles Dickens novel, performed by one of Britain's greatest comedians

Widely considered to be Charles Dickens' greatest and best-loved work, Great Expectations was first published as a serial between December 1860 - August 1861 and has been in print ever since. The story of a young boy from humble origins who dares to dream of becoming a gentleman, it is one of Dickens' most enduring and widely adapted novels.

In this new unabridged production, star comedian and polymath Eddie Izzard infuses the story of Pip with her trademark wit and flair, and breathes new life into some of Dickens' most memorable characters, while staying completely faithful to the novel.

A unique performer and storyteller, Eddie has long held a fascination for Dickens and his work. Whether you're already well-acquainted with the story or you've never read a Charles Dickens novel, this is a must-listen.

Izzard has done it again. Not content to pave the way for executive transvestites in stand up comedy, creating by far the best character in ocean eleven films, running 32 marathons in 31 days for charity, dabbling in politic and hundreds of other incredible life experiences, she is now undertaking the ginormous, mammoth sized effort to read Dickens. I was not dissapointed, even as a fan of Izzard, this was my first real introduction to Charles Dickens aside from 'Oliver Twist' and the 'Christmas carol' and I loved every moment. It was more unusual than I had anticipated, many real life adventures included within the plot but characters were complex as in 'real life', Dickens took me on this journey with Izzard's miraculous performances and professional narration. .....Can we also mention Izzard is dyslexic!! beautifully read x

Eddie Izzard's performance for this audiobook is absolutely fabulous. He clearly loves this story and is relishing (I'm still listening) reading it aloud. Highly recommend.

But, the editing is not 100%. There have been several times when a sentence has been repeated and the editor/producer has not deleted accordingly. So not an ideal production but Eddie Izzard's narration is very good.

Superb Narration Eddie Izzard.

The story, of course, was familiar and known to be one of Dickens' best, if not the best. But Eddie Izzard's reading of it added enormously to the pleasure I derived from it. He captured character, tone and sensitivity with subtle changes of pace and volume, and his own humour served to invest the comical passes - especially the account of Hamlet - with fresh energy. A tour dec force of narration.

Exceptional Rendering

Enjoyable from start to finish. Listening to Eddie Izzard tell this story was as good as I could hope for. Utter joy! I will miss this window of escapism but remember it with so much affection.

Just perfect

Beautifully read as a full one-person audio unabridged play with multiple-voiced characters by Suzy Eddie Izzard. Fully immersed into the world of Dickens & Pip. Great Expectations? Indeed.

Brought to life!

Dickens stories are always so full of characters and multi-layered threads of narrative. Eddie Izzard brought them all to life, so that I could visualise each person. Pip is slowly but steadily brought to adulthood and maturity. A triumph!

Expectations exceeded!
