1463: Stjepan Tomašević, der letzte Despot Serbiens und König von Bosnien, wird von osmanischen Reitern enthauptet. Seine hochschwangere Frau Helena beobachtet die Ermordung und kann mit einem kleinen Gefolge fliehen. Hilfe erhält sie auch von einem Pilger namens Johannes, der sie Richtung Norden ins sichere Graz des Heiligen Römischen Reiches führen will. Doch die Osmanen sind ihnen dicht auf den Fersen, und in einer Zeit von Krankheiten, Plagen und Kriegen scheint am Ende nur noch ein Bild die Hoffnung auf eine Zukunft zu nähren.
