Damit avancierte er zum Klassiker der philosophischen Religionskritik und beeinflusste u.a. Karl Marx und Friedrich Engels maßgebend. Feuerbachs als "Projektionsvorwurf" bekannte Kritik zeigt, dass Theologie und Metaphysik tatsächlich nur auf falsch verstandener Anthropologie und einer Übersteigerung des menschlichen Verstandesvermögens beruhen, wodurch sich der Mensch seiner selbst entfremdet habe.
