About this listen

A Warhammer Horror novel.

Scholar. Sorceress. Killer. Priest. Four people divided by their secrets and lies, bound together by horror, must unite their strengths to unpick a diabolical mystery to which they have but one incomprehensible clue - a single word: Mhurghast.

Listen to it because: glimpse what life looks like in Shyish, the Realm of Death, as an ancient family struggles with their place in the Mortal Realms. As it turns out, sometimes you must save yourselves.

The story: the Hollow. A lonely Shyishan town, obscured amongst wild moorland, inhabited by folk of vigilant routine. What remains of the once illustrious Gothghul family endures season upon season of monastic isolation in their castle on the hill. Aaric Gothghul, made callous by loss, shuts himself in his study and broods over arcane texts, while his strange and formidable daughter wanders the forests alone.

But when the town is threatened by a spate of sinister manifestations, the quiet formality of their days end. Worse still, the upheaval disturbs a terrible family secret - a chilling memory that Aaric has kept buried for 25 years. Now, father and daughter must set aside their differences and search for answers to an ancient curse that is somehow linked to their past. Aided by a straight-talking sharpshooter and a shrewd man of faith, they seek to fathom the forces that assail the Hollow.

Written by Anna Stephens. Narrated by Helen Keeley. Runtime nine hours and 42 minutes.

It's refreshing that the whole thing has a more romantic tone than the usual warhammer stuff, but the narrator struggles to get the story across because she imposes on certain charcters vast amounts of one-note emotional angst. She CAN read well when switching into a more narrative tone, but the wash of emotion in quite hefty chunks of text make it almost painful to listen to. Maybe the producers should have stepped in and advised her more clearly. A shame.

Hard to tell

The narrator ruins it too much . Way over the top weak emotional antics by her at wrong times takes away from the story , sticking with it though as I used a credit . Story ok but not great characters are not worthy of any form of sympathy ( well not by me but hey it could be me).

Bad narration, ok story

loved it, I went in blind, listen to audio books as I am painting, prefer Warhammer fantasy/old world but make do with age of sigmar, the story was great but the reveal at the end though, that name, loved it

the ending alone....

Overall I really enjoyed this book. Whilst the plot veered away from what I initially expected to be a good old fashioned monster hunting story, it did so in a way that didn't disappoint, with the ending being a genuine suprise to me and leaving me excited for the next one.

A great Gothic horror set in the mortal realms.

overall enjoyable but marred by slightly exaggerated narration and an annoying decision in the ending.

Spoilers below

This brings back a character that really should have stayed dead in warhammer fantasy. Rather than having a fresh new character we get the re-addition of a character that you can already tell will have some new levels of strength/ability for no reason at all.

honestly this makes it come off as a bit cheap.

Good story but marred by 2 factors

I absolutely loved this, excellent performance and very moody. I hope that there will be a sequel because I really want to know what happens next

Dark Fantasy at its finest

A captivating listen with all the trappings of classical horror - family secrets, dark magic, hauntings, moors, black hounds. Great twist at the end. Mhurghast is coming.

Dark and bloody with a ghastly twist

Blood, gore, darkness, and horror. All with a hint of adult themes. Listening to this was like experiencing Age of Sigmar written as beautifully as Warhammer Fantasy was. This is the first Age of Sigmar novel I have experienced that delivers on expanding the setting, compelling writing, and excellent characters. It truly has it all, and I can’t wait for the inevitable sequel to hear more about “the four”. Here’s hoping Games Workshop also make rules and models for the four main characters.

The quality that Warhammer deserves

Have listened to this on repeat for the last few days, perfect for the spooky session.

Perfect dark horror

Gothghul Hollow is an incredible accomplishment in speculative prose regarding the horror genre and gothic atmosphere. Fog-shrouded moors, crumbling castles and dark secrets all come to form a whimsically gothic fairytale which has left a lasting impression on me. The characters all felt real and relatable and Anna Stephens understands their balance within the book masterfully. This is a staple of the Black Library and Warhammer Horror line as a whole, and I would happily include in my TOP FIVE novels Games Workshop has produced. I excitedly await my next read of this classic!
