About this listen
Cornwall, 1786.
For years, the villagers of Mirecoombe have turned to their Keeper, the old and battle-scarred Lord Pelagius Hunt, mediator between the worlds of men and fey, for help. But this is a time of change. Belief in the old ways, in the piskies and spriggans, has dimmed, kindled instead in the Reverend Cleaver's fiery pulpit. His church stands proud above the mire; God's name is whispered, hushed, loved. And now, death stalks Mirecoombe on the moor. There are corpses in the heather. There is blood in the gorse.
Nancy Bligh is determined to do what Pel will not: maintain the balance between the fey and the human world, be the Keeper that he refuses to be. Blessed with natural sight, friend to spriggans, piskies and human locals of Mirecoombe, Nancy has power that Pel never had and never lets her use. But as Mirecoombe falls into darkness, perhaps her time has come.
A poignant and lyrical examination of faith, love and grief, Gorse asks what do we choose to believe, and how does that shape who we are?
The characters, solid and endearing, engage you instantly in the beautifully thought out nuances of their beliefs and intent.
The detail of the folklore woven throughout brings to life new levels of existence through detailed and well considered storytelling.
A powerful understanding and intelligent depiction of old knowledge while dealing with universal issues such as grief and the need for guidance is very well written.
This story is a sometimes uncomfortable but poignant reminder of the things we all should know and consider but that have been forgotten during the passage of time
The interweaving of the flora and moody power of the moor adds to the overall beauty of this book.
Haughtingly read, this story is a horrific treat for the senses that once heard will be remembered forever.
A Macabre Masterpiece!

I struggled to keep up with what was happening due to the shallowness of the plot and lack of description, and found myself zoning out a little with the story being a little drawn out in an attempt to pad it out.
I love folk fiction and it is dedinately worth a listen but I wanted a little more depth and padding out.
I really wanted to love this book
