About this listen
Katya never wanted to look after Gretchen. Now she’s the young girl’s only hope of survival.
1937. Katya Komarovsky is studying medicine in Glasgow, living among friends and eager to begin her career as a doctor. But when her spendthrift parents announce that they’ve run out of money and are facing ruin—and that she’ll now have to support them by working as a governess in Vienna—the life she’s dreamed of goes up in smoke.
Furiously resentful, Katya rages at her wealthy employer, Thor, for stealing her future—and saddling her with twelve-year-old Gretchen, a deeply troubled child who has only a blazing musical talent to redeem her. Yet as Katya grudgingly digs into her reserves of compassion, she finds herself losing her heart to both father and daughter.
Storm clouds are gathering, though, and when Hitler annexes Austria, patriot Thor is arrested, leaving Katya wholly responsible for saving ‘imperfect’ Gretchen from being forced into a Nazi medical research laboratory. With the terrifying uncertainty of the new world order, can Katya and Gretchen flee to safety? And dare they dream of ever seeing Thor again?

Extraordinary tale.
This was amazing, and I can see this becoming a film.
The writing made me feel I was with Katya throughout this extraordinary book. The emotions were so palpable.
The book was well researched, combining historical fact with fiction which made the book come alive.
Especially enjoyed the dinners with Sigmund Freud and his psychoanalysis chats. Also a glimpse into the work of Dr Asperger and some of his early ideas and work at his clinic,
Narration faultless, full of emotion and meaning.

A very good story, but …
It is over the top. The author could hsve done far more with somewhat fewer tyrns of the plot: there are dimply too nany escapes to qualify this book as hustorical fiction.
A commentator wrote of ‘Candide that everything in its story could have happened in the 18th century, but not to the same individual and the ssme is true here; one ir two lucky breaks woukd have made done just as well as a dozen, which, ultimately makes the outcome mire oredictabke and thus weakens the book as a whole.
My other major criticism is of the role of music in the story: it us quite impossible for a pianist who supposedly plays by ear to have accomplished everything Gretchen is supposed to have done, undervthe nervous duresse set up by the author: the same fault occurs in the film ‘The piano’ in which a concert oianist is set to play Chooin’s G minor blHallade stone cold, unrehearsed for months and with a death threat hanging over him!! This field should have been more thoroughly researched. … But it’s still a good read!

absolutely brilliant
I loved this book. the story was difficult to listen at times. the interrogations by the gestapo were undertaken with sensitivity but powerful enough to make me think. the story was simply beautiful.
I would definitely as recommend and have already started my next marius Gabriel novel.

Not many books have the capacity to give me tears, this one did. A lovely but poignant listen.

Marius’s characters grow inside the reader and is supported so well by historical relevance my best read and listen for a long time. I was sorry to say goodbye at the end!
