Summary

Somebody wants answers.

It's 1995 in North Devon, England. There's a born-again revival meeting in a public building; the usual mix of the faithful, the curious, and the desperate. And one other - an atheist suicide bomber. He's angry. He wants answers. And if God doesn't come and talk to him personally, he's going to kill everyone in the building....

"He couldn't care less about any of this"

Any additional comments?

A community hall in North Devon, one Sunday morning in 1995, being used as a makeshift church. About 70 peop!e In attendance, inc!using a drunk, an elderly couple, a teenage girl, a woman in a wheelchair, a young man and his heavily pregnant wife, the preacher - and a young man with a demand: he wants God to speak to him personal!y. Or else they all die.
This is the setting, indeed, the entirety, of this remarkably riveting book. As the readers we are there, also prisoners in that cheerless hall, trapped with the intense young man with the bomb. And where is God? Is He there? If so, how will He speak? No need to be a believer - not everyone in the story is - to be totally absorbed in and terrified for the lives of those held hostage as the story unfolds through their disparate points of view. Sounds !ike it might be confusing? It's not. Instead, each person becomes real, three dimensional, with startling clarity.
Chris Barnes is our anchor. At first surprising that the reader would come with a Scottish accent rather than one more fitting for Devon, this strange distinction was quickly lost with the excellence of his narration and it was only later that I realised it also helped to, mercifully, separate us from the trapped congregation. He allows us to hear each of their voices, feel for them, suffer with them, yet still, Godlike, remain aloof.
The author prefaces the book with a list of those whose stories will be interwoven and also the statement that, "Almost none of it happened but this is how I remember it", a chilling reminder that the events unfo!ding are only too possible.
My profound thanks to the rights holder from whom I received the gift of God Bomb, via Audiobook Boom. It was refreshingly different, superbly gripping, and scary as hell. Especially the totally unexpected ending ...
