Summary

I’m Jinx, a run-of-the-mill private investigator...except I’m also a walking, talking lie detector. Oh, and I belong to magical realm known as the Other.

Murder isn’t usually my gig, but when I’m hired to investigate the death of a dryad called Reggie, I agree to help out because I know his grieving widow. It should be an easy case to crack, a mugging gone wrong, but the murder scene photos show it was anything but. Reggie’s death has all the hallmarks of my parents’ murders so I’ll stop at nothing to finding his killers. It’s so important I’d even be willing to tag in Stone to help - if I could find him...

Reggie was into some bad stuff involving a drug called Boost. Take it, and you play Russian roulette because either you get high or you die. As the drug claims another victim, I find myself with a new sidekick who is determined to fight its evil influence and he just happens to be the king of the dragon community.

Now I have two deaths to solve and one suave dragon king along for the ride.

I need to find Reggie’s murderer.

I need to discover who killed my parents.

And I need to keep my distance from the charismatic dragon Emory, who refuses to take no for an answer...

Fantastic sequel

“I opened Reggie’s folder and laid his crime scene pictures next to my parents’. The similarities were undeniable; the marks on the bodies were not identical but near as dammit. I felt a thrill of excitement. It really was a lead. I was almost sure that whoever had killed Reggie had also killed my parents. And this time I was going to find them.” - Jinx

Murder isn’t usually Jinx’s gig but when she’s hired to investigate the gruesome death of a dryad named Reggie, she agrees because she knows his grieving widow, Joyce. Initially, Jinx thinks it’s an easy case to crack - simply a robbery gone wrong. However, it later transpires that the similarities between Reggie’s crime scene photos and those of her parents are virtually identical. With her first real lead in over five years, Jinx vows to stop at nothing to find those responsible.

Jinx eventually learns that Reggie was somehow mixed up in the distribution of a volatile new drug known as Boost that is responsible for a recent spate of deaths. When the drug claims another victim, Jinx finds herself teaming up with Emory, the leader of the dragon community who is investigating a Boost related death of one of his own.

As Jinx comes closer to solving her case she finds herself facing off against vampires, witches, unicorns, and griffins, little realising that the true enemy is right under her nose...

Glimmer of Hope is the second thrilling instalment of the highly entertaining Other Realm series. Once again the author has intricately woven a complex suspense-filled plot, that is original with a charm of its own.

Told from Jinx’s perspective, the book picks up eight weeks after the events of the previous book. We learn that Jinx has sold up and moved her PI agency to Liverpool. Her blossoming relationship with Stone has suffered a setback after she realised he had compelled her to trust him when they first met. Instead, accompanying her in her latest investigation is the charismatic leader of the dragons himself, Prime Elite Emory. The chemistry between Jinx and Emory was amazing and was one of my favourite aspects of the book. While it remains to be seen whether Stone will redeem himself, I for one am definitely rooting for the dragon 😉

The author has a unique talent for writing believable relationships and not just of the romantic kind. In one instance, for example, the author revisits an incident from Jinx’s past that was first touched upon in Glimmer of Dragons. As a result, Jinx is able to appreciate the lengths that Wilf went to over the years, to bring her over to the Other and the two share a tender moment. Watching loyalties cement, friendships bloom and characters grow is just part of the reason to invest your time and energy in this series.

All in all, this was a worthy addition with a gripping plot line and memorable characters that will reel readers in hook line and sinker. The devastating cliffhanger at the end regarding a certain character has ensured that this reader will be eagerly anticipating the follow-up.

Highly recommended for fans of urban fantasy, magical realms, wizards, vampires, werewolves, unicorns, griffins, dryads, seers, hellhounds, secret societies and mysteries etc

Alyse Gibbs has once again masterfully brought the characters to life with her clear and concise narration.

Glimmer of Hope

Having read the ebook, I’m loving listening to the audios and picking up all the bits I missed first time around; as well as falling in love with Gato, Jinx and Emory all over again. Alyse Gibbs brings the characters to life amazingly. Definitely a series that I will be reading and listening to again!
