Sotto il bancone del Libro dei Libri, viene trovato un cadavere, ed il Commissario De Vincenzi è chiamato a indagare. Poco dopo un altro omicidio ancora più efferato. Tutto porta ad una congrega di stranieri che covano odio e vendetta per ragioni lontane nel tempo.

Negli anni Trenta era di regola esorcizzare il genere «giallo», malconsiderato sotto il fascismo. Ma De Vincenzi, spirito irrequieto, non fascista, innovatore, vi aggiungeva tutti quei sapori che fanno dei suoi romanzi dei classici imprescindibili.

Nel mezzo della moda imperante del romanzo-enigma, ripetizione di modelli anglosassoni, i gialli di De Angelis sono inchieste condotte da un investigatore non rivolto ai soli indizi materiali, ma al contrario interprete delle atmosfere e soprattutto della psicologia degli attori del crimine.
