Seine Mutter Merle misstraut der neuen Ordnung, kann aber nur ohnmächtig zusehen, wie sein Traum ihren Sohn in die Arme der Hitlerjugend treibt. Manche Einwohner der kleinen Stadt leiden, andere profitieren – und die meisten versuchen, sich irgendwie zu arrangieren. Doch der Krieg, an fernen Fronten geschlagen, ist bald auch in Ginsterburg zu spüren, in den erschütterten Beziehungen und Seelen der Menschen. Und über allem schwebt ein britischer Bomberpilot, der sich dem einstmals beschaulichen Städtchen unaufhaltsam nähert.
