About this listen

New York Times bestselling author Nora Roberts weaves scandal, celebrity secrets, and murder into an explosive novel of Hollywood almost too wicked not to be true: the story of a legendary actress who knows too much - and the woman she’s chosen to reveal it all....

Eve Benedict is the kind of subject who could make any biographer’s career. Last of the movie goddesses, she has two Oscars, four ex-husbands, and a legion of lovers, both famous and infamous. Now she is ready to write a tell-all memoir that has even Hollywood’s richest and most powerful worried.

Julia Summers never dreamed of being chosen to tell Eve’s story. But even if it means transplanting herself and her ten-year-old son from their quiet life in Connecticut to the withering limelight of Beverly Hills, it’s an opportunity too great to pass up. But Julia never imagined how far someone would go to keep Eve Benedict’s book from being published...until she discovers just how dark Eve’s secrets are. And the one man Julia hopes she can trust - Eve’s stepson, Paul Winthrop - may have the most to gain if his stepmother’s story is never told...and if Julia’s life ends before she can write a word of the truth.

“Roberts does a beautiful job weaving together the movie star’s titillating tales and the love story that develops.” - USA Today

Loved this!
Was supposed to listen for about 30 minutes each night, but ended up binge listening.
The narrator told the story well, making each character seem real and individual.
The story was intriguing as it unfolded, gritty and romantic without being too slushy. A typical NR novel.

Narrated Well

I enjoyed the whole thing: storyline, characters and narration. I wasn't surprised by the outcome and there was the usual boy meets girl story running through it, but I listen to stories whilst I'm working, so a convoluted storyline doesn't work for me. All in all, I thoroughly enjoyed listening to this book.

Excellent book!

Thoroughly enjoyed the romance and mystery balance this story has.
Beautiful people with flawed natures fill this great book. Loved the way it looked back into the Hollywood of old, the glamour and opulence of that lifestyle. Then, like an onion, the different layers are revealed as Eve's story is told.
There are hints at where the story is going, but there are enough twists and turns to keep you guessing so the story keeps you listening till the very end.
Loved the narrators take on each of the characters - well done on the breadth of voices used, including the childish ones which can sometimes grate if not done well. Old Hollywood was portrayed through Eve in a captivating way.
Recommend you have a listen and loose yourself in a world of glitter and villains!

Hollywood At It's Best

Genuine Lies is an enjoyable romantic suspense, filled with secrets, lies, and murder. I loved the exciting storyline and the main characters, but did have trouble keeping up with the many side players. I highly recommend it.

An enjoyable listen

Didn’t like the narration. I love Nora’s books and she has amazing narrators - however this book I didn’t enjoy so much. Story was slightly confusing so I must have dazed off somewhere as the is doesn’t usually happen. Anyway, glad I’ve finished it and now into the next one!!

Took a While

You kind of know what you're getting with Nora Roberts, but in this case I found the love development between the two main characters a bit too quick and simple.

The love connection a bit simplistic

When I first started listening I didn’t think I’d last long as I was unsure of the narrator’s voice, but I persevered and actually the narrator was very good. Enjoyed the story, good twists. Would recommend.

Good story

I used to enjoy Nora Roberts books but I now find the storylines so similar. The portrayal of women as ‘independent’ and yet stupid enough to fall into the arms of the patronising male ‘heroes’, far too predictable. Would be refreshing to for once read about a woman who ends the tale single and happy as many independent women are!
