Summary

Tuscany, 1358: Thomas Blackstone has built a formidable reputation in exile, fighting as a mercenary amid the ceaseless warring of Italy's City States. But when a dying man delivers a message recalling him to England, it seems to be a trap. Yet Blackstone cannot disobey and will brave the terrors of the High Alps in winter, face the Black Prince in tournament and submit to trial by combat. Every step of the way, he is shadowed by a notorious assassin with orders to dispatch him to hell....

Great 3rd book in series. Emotions & Feelings.

Ended too soon - mainly due to being such a gripping storyline. Tough is an understatement!

great again

A little heavier going than previous (politics of the time I suppose) brillant narrator on this one, also a golden opportunity for 2 cliff hangers for next book near the end... I'm glad they were solved before the end though lol

Poor continuity

Well read but, unlike to previous 2 books which were excellent, the story appears to have been writen in a hurry and without checking whether it fits together. Nothing like its forebears

Disappointing

Master of war series - gripping

I have read, I think most of the main authors of Historical fiction such as Conn Iggulden, Bernard Shaw etc. This series is as good if not better then some of these. Sof if your like the others try this one. The tale follows a Thomas as he grows from zero to hero. The books pick up characters along the way but Thomas is always at the fore. I listened to the series while driving and can genuinely say that the miles flew by and I didnt want to stop and get out of the car. There are bit s that I feel drag on but theses few and far between. The subtle hints at the start of the book then come together at the end as things fall into place. The Narrator of book 1 and 2 is great and gives clear distinguishable acents to all the characters. I did find the narator of book 3 was not as good and also changed the voices of key characters. The main issues was that it was read in a a continous depressing tone - sorry but!!.
In short just buy it and try it. You need to start at book one though so you can pick up on the themses that run through the whole series.

Good story shame about narrator change

Much as the others have said really found the change of narrator difficult to cope with. Not too bad in the end but still much prefer his predecessor. Found Colin’s strange over long pauses difficult to cope with but these did lessen as the book progressed. Enjoyed the story and up to previous standards of enjoyment

Excellent story, that is well read. I have listened to the two previous books and the story progresses at a cracking pace.
