About this listen

The dynamic epic novel of political upheaval and societal change in late 1800s Japan, by the #1 New York Times bestselling author and unparalleled master of historical fiction, James Clavell

This epic novel by master writer James Clavell, loosely based on the Namamugi Incident and Anglo-Satsuma War that took place in the late 1800s, is a richly researched, panoramic view of Japan’s budding relationship with the Western powers, its sweeping societal changes, and the political upheaval that followed.

As Malcolm Struan, the son of Culum and Tess Struan, and a small band of Westerners travel down the Tōkaidō road, they are attacked by two Satsuma samurai, who mortally wound John Canterbury and seriously injure Malcolm, who then finds reprieve in the merchant village of Yokohama after a narrow escape facilitated by the unscathed Angelique.

Angelique Richaud, Malcolm’s penniless but beautiful French companion, is thrown into a world of political intrigue, fierce devotion, unstable family dynamics, blackmail, and secrets as the trading houses battle for supremacy.

With a cast of dynamic and fully recognized characters, Gai-Jin spins a tale of passionate love affairs, devastating loss, intense power struggles, and the fight to survive and thrive in a hostile new land that will leave listeners longing for another foray into Clavell’s extraordinary Asian Saga.

Great listen, more compelling than Tai pan, I felt

Loved the book, and thought it was of similar quality to shogun. Perhaps I am biased towards Japanese stories.

A good journey but maybe not a good story

The best part is the world building, the descriptions, and the voice acting is perfect, the story is a bit slow and inconclusive though.

Extremely captivating!

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Yes! It tells more than a beautiful story. This book brings you in the mind of its characters and they live you and makes you better. Absolutely Epic

What was one of the most memorable moments of Gai-Jin?

The duel between Toranaga Yoshi

What does John Lee bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you had only read the book?

He gives life to characters. When you listen this audiobook they are standing in front of you.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

No! You do not want the pleasure to finish so soon

Any additional comments?

The best thing about this book are the characters. They are all so complex and perfectly described. By the end of the book they are friends and they live you.

Somehow not as good as Shogun and Tai-Pan

Perhaps there were too many characters or perhaps I just wasn't listening carefully enough but I found this one a little harder to follow. I never felt fully engaged.

Fantastic

Yet another fantastic book by James Clavell. The whole Noble House series is well worth the read.

Not bad, but not brilliant

Not a bad story, not as gripping as Tai Pan, but AGAIN, a disappointing ending. Tess Struhan suddenly appears to be from the south west of England as opposed to Tai Pan where the Brocks were portrayed with thick Yorkshire accents

Brilliant, different from Shogun

Another masterpiece, flawed but brilliant. The reader is phenomenal at creating distinct and recognisable voices for each character, though his Japanese accents and pronunciations are appalling.

A Web of Warriors, Lies and Racism

equally as good as Shogun. Same setting (just about) as The Last Samurai, but far more realistic and detailed. would make perfect HBO show

Amazing, though not as brilliant as the first

Very clever and I thoroughly enjoyed it, but it doesn't have the scale of Shogun
