About this listen
'By normal, you mean like you? A slag with a saviour complex?'
Nadia is an academic who's been disowned by her puritanical mother and dumped by her lover, Rosy. She decides to make a getaway, accepting a UN job in Iraq. Tasked with rehabilitating ISIS women, Nadia becomes mired in the opaque world of international aid, surrounded by bumbling colleagues.
Sara is a precocious and sweary East Londoner who joined ISIS at just fifteen.
Nadia is struck by how similar they are: both feisty and opinionated, from a Muslim background, with a shared love of Dairy Milk and rude pick-up lines. A powerful friendship forms between the two women, until a secret confession from Sara threatens everything Nadia has been working for.
A bitingly original, wildly funny and razor-sharp exploration of love, family, religion and the decisions we make in pursuit of belonging, Fundamentally upends and explores a defining controversy of our age with heart, complexity and humour.©2025 Nussaibah Younis (P)2025 Orion Publishing Group Limited

Talk about bureaucracy
Well well well. This is quite the debut. This author looks at a very serious topic but intertwines humour excellent. I wouldn’t say either of one of main characters are the most likeable but Nadia is good at heart just very misguided.

vivid descriptions and brilliant humour
the line about it being that time of day where half the cars have their head lights on and half don't was one of my favourite lines! i could picture that time of day perfectly, along with all the other pinpoint accurate descriptions she gave us. the humour she poured in was pitch perfect. several times she had me both chuckling and crying on the tube. all of the characters were very frustrating, in that way that people are in real life! The bureuacracy and internal politics they had to face through it all were definitely the most frustrating characters! haha. overall loved the themes explored re family, faith, identity, gender, and was just a very entertaining listen.

Fantastic! Best book I've read in years. I couldn't put it down. Just brilliantly written and read- showing knowledge and understanding of the harsh reality of life, whilst using empathy.

Impossible to stop listening
I went through this in about two days in 3 sittings. Such a compelling story, great characters and beautiful storytelling. Never heard of this book or author before seeing them here but will definitely be an author I look out for in the future. Highly recommended.

Excellent
An enjoyable story with well drawn, complex characters. The narrator was incredible - she really bought the characters to life.

Interesting and educational but I didn’t get the humour as it was too sad
I like the narrator, the pace and turn of phrase. Good realistic plot and mainly believable characters. But to me it is a serious book and I don’t agree with some of the media reviews. A good debut
