Summary

NPR foreign correspondent Tom Gjelten on this archival edition of Fresh Air. Gjelten's book is Sarajevo Daily. During the height of the Serbian siege on Sarajevo the city was in ruins but one symbol of hope remained constant for its people, Oslobodjenje the city's multi-ethnic daily newspaper. When the siege began, the paper's editor vowed, "As long as Sarajevo exists, this paper will publish everyday." Gjelten uses the paper as a backdrop for his book in order to look at the larger issue of the war-torn country and its people. He was the Eastern and Central European correspondent for NPR from September 1990 to December 1993. (Original Broadcast Date: February 9, 1995)
