***Winner of the Irish Book Awards for Popular Fiction Book of the Year***

The new novel from million-copy bestseller and national treasure Graham Norton - a dazzling, decades-sweeping story about love, bravery and what it means to live a significant life.

SUNDAY INDEPENDENT

Always on the periphery, looking on, young Frankie Howe was never quite sure enough of herself to take centre stage - after all, life had already judged her harshly. Now old, Frankie finds it easier to forget the life that came before.

Then Damian, a young Irish carer, arrives at her London flat, there to keep an eye on her as she recovers from a fall. A memory is sparked, and the past crackles into life as Damian listens to the story Frankie has kept stored away all these years.

Travelling from post-war Ireland to 1960s New York - a city full of art, larger than life characters and turmoil - Frankie shares a world in which friendship and chance encounters collide. A place where, for a while, life blazes with an intensity that can't last but will perhaps live on in other ways and in other people. But as Frankie's past slowly emerges, her spirit and endurance are revealed as undeniable . . . and unforgettable.

Story of a life well lived

The story really bought the decades 50s through to end of the 80’s alive for me. I knew from films and books about the bohemian art world and wild party eras but never really understood it all until now. Really touching story of a life well lived, written and read beautifully.

Wonderful story, perfectly narrated.

Excellent story about an extraordinary life spanning various countries across a number of decades. The narration is flawless, well performed and thankfully not overly dramatic.

Favourite book of 2024

Finished this book within days which is rare for me. A great story, great characters, and so brilliantly brought to life by Graham's narration.

It Made Me Cry

I loved this story. I loved Frankie and I loved Grahams narration, even his slightly funny accents. I am smiling as the book ends. Oh to have a life like Frankie.

Thoroughly engaging

I really came to like Frankie and felt her emotions as she was manipulated in her early years, grew independent and developed her strength and love as she grew. Her supporting characters came to life and the opportunity to relive it by telling her story worked well. The narration by the author was excellent, and another triumph for Graham Norton.

Absolutely brilliant!

I loved the depth of the story and it was read so well by the author - it was one of those books that I just did not want to end - but the ending was perfect.
Thank you Graham Norton - I am wiping my tears away. xx
