About this listen

When an ex-catholic woman develops a sexual relationship with a vampire, she is forced to confront the memories that haunt her religious past. Struggling to deal with the familial trauma of her Catholic upbringing, hotel cleaner, Noelle, travels to the Isle of Bute. There, she meets a man who claims to be a vampire, and a relationship blooms between them based solely on confession.

But as talk turns sacrilegious, and the weather outside grows colder, Noelle struggles to come to terms with her blasphemous sexuality. She becomes hounded by memories of her past: her mother's affair with the local priest, and the part she played in ending it.

Emotional and complex perfect for audio

Fragile Animals is the perfect book for audiobook in my opinion. Genevieve unique and descriptive writing style lens itself perfectly to narration. The story explorers the past of a young Scottish woman raised Catholic as she visits the Isle of Butte to hide from and ultimately confront her demons when she meets a vampire.

This is not your typical vampire book and realistically he is not the focus of the story. I was gripped by the tale as the different layers of Noelle’s history were progressively revealed. Well the main character is not necessarily likable she is complex and satisfying. This novel criticises many aspects of a Catholic upbringing which many will find relatable.

I enjoyed this narrator and their tone and found it easy to listen to. However, I did find it confusing that we have a Scottish accent when our main character discusses at one point that they don’t have an accent. There were also a few noticeable errors in the audio edit which I feel detract from the skill of the author. I hope that the audio editor and publisher would pay more attention to detail as the incidents of repetition of text lines were noticed on more than one occasion.

Overall, I would recommend this audiobook and novel to those who enjoy contemporary fiction which which avoids common tropes and showcases deeply flawed characters throughout.
