About this listen
Rachel's dead and she's never coming back. Or is she?
As she prepares for her wedding to Dominic, Catherine has never been happier or more excited about her future. But when she receives an anonymous package - a familiar snow globe with a very grisly addition - that happiness is abruptly threatened by secrets from her past.
Her older sister, Rachel, died on a skiing holiday as a child. But Rachel was no angel: she was vicious and highly disturbed, and she made Catherine's life a misery. Catherine has spent years trying to forget her dead sister's cruel tricks. Now someone has sent her Rachel's snow globe - the first in a series of ominous messages...
While Catherine struggles to focus on her new life with Dominic, someone out there seems intent on tormenting her. But who? And why now? The only alternative is what she fears most.
Is Rachel still alive?
©2018 Jane Holland (P)2018 Brilliance Publishing, Inc., all rights reservedI grew up on thrillers and crime novels (probably from too young an age) and I spotted the first "twist" a few chapters in, if that. The story was still masterfully written, with the unreliable narrator revealing her instabilities bit by bit, in a way that built rich, believable main characters. It says much that, despite seeing where the primary plot arc was heading, I was enthralled by the storytelling, and I was enjoying the tale immensely until 2/3 of the way in.
Then, the OTHER twists took me almost completely by surprise. For every surprise I'd half-guessed, there were two more that came as an utter shock. The last 25-30% of this book was a rollercoaster ride, and one that I'm sorry I can't experience again. Bloody marvellous.
The performance was excellent as well, with real depths of emotion and changing vocal nuances that helped to make each character's voice distinct and memorable; very reliable performance, with each character having the same tone and accent throughout. The one Brummie accent does fall a bit short of the others, but otherwise, I can't fault the voice actor at all. Wonderful listening experience.
