About this listen

Harry Flashman: the unrepentant bully of Tom Brown’s schooldays, now with a Victoria Cross, has three main talents – horsemanship, facility with foreign languages and fornication. A reluctant military hero, Flashman plays a key part in most of the defining military campaigns of the 19th century, despite trying his utmost to escape them all.

When our hero Flashman accepts an invitation from his old enemy, Tom Brown of Rugby, to join in a friendly cricket match, he does not suspect that he is letting himself in for the most desperate game of his scandalous career.

What follows is a deadly struggle that sees him scampering from the hallowed wicket of Lord’s to the jungle lairs of Borneo pirates; from a Newgate hanging to the torture pits of Madagascar, and from Chinatown’s vice dens to slavery in the palace of ‘the female Caligula’ herself, Queen Ranavalona of Madagascar.

Had he known what lay ahead, Flashman would never have taken up cricket seriously.

Critic reviews

'The Flashman Papers do what all great sagas do – winning new admirers along the way but never, ever betraying old ones. It is an immense achievement.' Sunday Telegraph

‘Not so much a march as a full-blooded charge, fortified by the usual lashings of salty sex, meticulously choreographed battle scenes and hilariously spineless acts of self preservation by Flashman.’ Sunday Times

‘Not only are the Flashman books extremely funny, but they give meticulous care to authenticity. You can, between the guffaws, learn from them.’ Washington Post

‘A first-rate historical novelist’ Kingsley Amis

I think this is one of Flashmans most exciting stories about how his adored wife gets him into awful trouble. It’s very humorous and exciting. Do you you spell

Marvellous

The next instalment of Flashman's adventures are just as well researched, well written, well told as the previous... this should be compulsory schooling for all males!

Another scorcher

This is up to the usual high standard of the Flashman tales. Great fun, and as usual the coward and cad performs heroically!

a really good adventure!

Another enjoyable Flashman book. The character gains in depth here I think. The narrative took a while to pick up this time I felt, but still a good, easy listen when feeling less able to have something educational, and yet picking up a little bit of lesser known history!

Another enjoyable Flashman romp

What did you like most about Flashman's Lady?

Great evocation of early cricket matches and, as ever, GMF knows how to pace a book. It's a great shame the actor reading it isn't any where near good enough. Wrong voice and some awful reading gaffes [ doesn't anyone monitor the recordings ]
Get Timothy West to read them.I heard the best Flashman [ for me ] F in the Great Game
read by him and the voice is spot on.

How could the performance have been better?

Differant reader.

Did you have an emotional reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

No.

Brilliant writing, poor narration

Excellent but for one entirely wrong rendition of ‘heart of oak’ with no idea of how the tune goes!

Good as always

Colin Mace does his best, but gets a lot of proper nouns wrong, and has no clue about holding a tune when called on to sing.

Let down by the narration

More splendidly politically incorrect yarns from the Flashman papers. Wonderfully narrated, and meticulously researched. This is peak Flashman. For the first time in the series, we get to hear things from Elspeth’s perspective. Elspeth being Mrs Flashman. This innovation adds a whole new level of intrigue and humour.

Flashy on top form

I have very quickly come to love the Flashman series of books and this one has not disappointed. This novel evokes a time when travelling in Asia really was exploration. McDonald has written a gripping adventure story but for me the real joy is just how funny it is.

Such fun
