Summary
Sometimes, your case takes a left turn. Or three or four. Marten Mingenstern and Boog Eggstrom are provisional inspectors, fresh out of Inquisitor’s Guild training and eager to prove themselves. Assigned the mundane task of tracking down stolen jewels, they instead uncover a mysterious cult set on destroying the city. After a thief explodes, they earn the enmity of a vicious noble, the Chief Inquisitor gets bought off and goes rogue, they are seized by barbarians, and they are sentenced to death at least a couple of times. In a final, frantic race with prophecy, they face ruthless fanatics, a city turned against them, and terrible forces long buried.
Flames over Frosthelm is the first novel about the Inquisitor's Guild, the investigative arm of the government of Frosthelm, a medieval city-state where criminals thrive, nobles scheme, and dark secrets lurk. Expect intrigue, mystery, swordplay, adventure, politics, romance, and the strong bonds of friendship. And a little magic along the way. Described as Princess Bride meets CSI, this new novel is a tale of classic adventure with a healthy dose of humor.
Flames over Frosthelm is a full stand-alone novel. Beginning, middle, and end, and no waiting for sequels to find out how the adventure ends (hear that, George R.R.?). There is swordplay, violence, death, and some romance, but the audiobook does not include anything terribly hardcore. Think PG13 or Harry Potter and you're probably in the right place.

Absolutely Glorious!
Flames Over Frosthelm written by Dave Dobson and narrated by Simon De Deney is a fresh new take on the comedy/ fantasy crossover. My initial reactions compared this to a croosover between Tom Holt and Monty Python but as I travelled further into the tale, there is so much more!
A fantasy epic that follows our heroes as they investigate the evil lord Marron, and the timeline of preventing much evil at the time of a pending eclipse, our heroes have to endure false accusations, imprisonment, loss and so much more
"It's quite inconvenient when your prisoner explodes"
Simon De Deney is the perfect match to narrate this book. Deadpan for Marten's narration, but in scenes, a skillful comedic twist. LIkewise Boog's looming thoughtfulness, but with a subtle humour in the consumption of many, many cakes at the house of Terence and his wife (The Baked Goods chapter had me howling!)
Marten and Boog's dynamic is wonderful. They have a strong loyalty but are as quick to roast each other as they are to protect each other, The quiet Giant and the inept sorcerer who is half the size (the scene where they were both riding but Marten had to go into the river to cool off was utterly genius!
The fight scenes are fantastic. Marten is an incredibly heroic antihero, he has a humility that is utterly endearing. He is also more brave than he realises and I really enjoyed the story arc between him and Clarice (she is a powerful warrior, adept with a bow and Marten is not just in awe of her, but deeply in love with her)
Marten, Boog and Clarice were all at school together ad this is another storyline I gravitated towards, the shared history and humour was entertaining as much as it was endearing and relatable. Dobson has a real knack of creating characters that are humble, yet hilarious, powerful yet vulnerable
Another favourite character is Gora. An old jailer who is the saviour in disguise of Marten and Boog and her use of an inquisitors staff is quite a thing to observe!
Dave Dobson's storytelling is highly compelling and I was delighted that this audiobook was a full 15 hours packed full of hilarity, adventure, twist, turns, topple and quips. I cannot recommend this enough and I will be getting all 4 books in this series as Flames Over Frosthelm is just the beginning and I for one am ready for so much more!
Thank you to StoryOrigin, Dave Dobson and Simon De Deney for an absolutely glorious ALC. My review is left voluntarily and all opinions are my own

A wonderful saga
This is a wonderful saga, with a lovingly created world, great real characters, ,lots of intrigue and treachery, magic and mystery, courage and fortitude, a slow burn romance, a world ending conspiracy based on an ancient prophecy. Two trainee inquisitors investigating a theft uncover a huge conspiracy involving the highest nobles, framed for murder they are forced into the borderlands. I loved the story, the world that the author has created and the characters. This is a long story but it is always engrossing, detailed and involving. The narration is good, the narrator has a good voice and range but is a little stilted sometimes with his delivery but this is not a major thing. I received a complimentary copy from Storyorigin and am leaving a voluntary honest review

I can’t listen to this narrator
It might be a good story but this narrator bored me to tears. Had to return the title.
