About this listen
1803. The Napoleonic Wars. A Royal Navy warship is ordered to pursue an enemy frigate to the icy waters far south in the Indian Ocean. There, it must capture the enemy ship and retrieve a mysterious sea chest, contents unknown, failure not permitted.
For the determined young captain and his eager crew, this already dangerous mission turns into a battle with a mysterious vessel that appears not in the sea, but unbelievably, impossibly, in the sky above.
But nothing could prepare the crew for what lay beyond the 50th latitude of south.
Embark on an astonishing adventure in Fifty Degrees South, the action-packed, science fiction novel that listeners around the world can't turn off.

Only a couple of things that dragged my rating from a 5 to a 4 overall (recognising I put 5 to the only two sub options!).
Firstly, for a full audible credit it’s quite short at 4-5 hours, so in terms of value I’d suggest this would be better value as part of a bundle (which I’ve seen done elsewhere).
The narrator has a wonderfully therapeutic voice (reminds me slightly of Ringo Starr doing Thomas the Tank engine!) and really brought the characters distinctly to life. But a couple of small mispronunciations but me more than they should - coxswain should be “cox-un” rather than “cox-wane” and I think I forecastle is “folk-sl”.
Either way, did enjoy so will find the rest of the series!
Really compelling story!

Really unique book

Well narrated. And Nautical terms are accurate.
It’s also short. I have a rule not to waste a credit on a book < than 10 hours.
While interested in seeing what happens to Alex Burns. I won’t be buying the next books.
Not Master and Commander meets Stat Trek

Waste of a credit and over advertised

Firstly: The monotone delivery of the narrator, no change in tone, inflection, or pace to suit what was actually happening, if this guy could read my kids’ bedtime story they’d be asleep in 2 minutes.
Secondly: this is basically a short story that’s been artlessly padded out like a student trying to meet a word count on a report. Whole chunks that felt like they were lifted from a google search of ‘how a naval cannon works’, ‘why ships have female names’ etc, and the pointless ‘plot device’ of one of the characters only speaking Gaelic so everything he says has to be translated, to name just the two most jarring.
Couldn’t finish this
