About this listen

Brought to you by Penguin.

In Feral, George Monbiot, one of the world's most celebrated radical thinkers, offers a riveting tale of possibility and travel in the wild.

How many of us sometimes feel that we are scratching at the walls of this life, seeking to find our way into a wider space beyond? That our mild, polite existence sometimes seems to crush the breath out of us? Feral is the lyrical and gripping story of George Monbiot's efforts to reengage with nature and discover a new way of living. He shows how, by restoring and rewilding our damaged ecosystems on land and at sea, we can bring wonder back into our lives. Making use of some remarkable scientific discoveries, Feral lays out a new, positive environmentalism, in which nature is allowed to find its own way.

Critic reviews

"Captivating. Will change the way you think about the natural world, and your place in it." (Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall)

"George Monbiot is always original - both in the intelligence of his opinions and the depth and rigour of his research. In this unusual book he presents a persuasive argument for a new future for the planet, one in which we consciously progress from just conserving nature to actively rebuilding it." (Brian Eno)

"A Book of Revelations for our times." (Farley Mowat)

This book has been referenced a few times by other re-wilding books as the start of a movement, and its not wrong. It shows (at least to me) that the real disaster looming is not a climate disaster (although that is important) but an ecological one. Its just pushing me to do more rewilding where I can and donate money to good causes.

What a labour of love this book is. Every chapter was thought-provoking and well argued, and the glimmers of hope for a wilder future are so beautifully and passionately written. 10/10

In searching for recommendations on nature writing this book kept coming up in people’s top 5. I already follow the author on social media, so thought I’d give it a read.
I’m really pleased I did, it’s a brilliant book full of beautiful writing and a lot of honesty about the state of the islands we call home. At times depressing because of that honesty the thing the book inspired most was hope, which 10 years after it was written we need more than ever! Highly recommended.

Loved the book, highly recommended.

Monbiot takes you on a tumultuous voyage of loss, wonder, anger and hope in this enlightening insight into the campaign for rewilding Britain’s lands and seas. Sometimes easy slackwater, sometimes tempestuous in its pace, it leaves you with an enduring sense of why we cherish and crave a connection with nature.

Short chapters, each on a different idea. Learn about issues surrounding rewilding illustrated with the author's personal
anecdotes. Interesting but not stuffy.

Very interesting snippets on rewilding issues

The first part made me want to stop and exit- exciting; worrying and almost without purpose. Persevere and the mid journey makes a great and connecting sense. I hope you enjoy this.

Started Strangely- grew Magnificently- ended achingly

Read it, recommend it, share it.

Monbiot calmly but passionately lays out the case for a practical re-wilding. He shows how far policy lags behind our needs, skewed towards harmful farming and fishery practices.

It makes you see your surroundings in a new light, which only the very best books can do.

An important book
