About this listen

Winner 2018 SOVAS Award for Audiobook Narration - Teens, Best Voiceover

They are the fatemarked. Misunderstood. Worshipped. Hated. Murdered at birth. Their time to step into the light has come.

An ancient prophecy foretold their coming, the chosen few who will bring peace to a land embroiled in a century of mistrust and war. When kings start dying, that hope and belief swiftly turns to fear. Roan Loren is one of the fatemarked, but has hidden his mark of power his entire life, fearing the damage it might cause to those around him.

A great evil is coming. He can't hide anymore.

In the spirit of fantasy epics like Throne of Glass and The Lord of the Rings, enter a world of magic and dragons, kings and queens, and victory and defeat, during a time when honor and valor still meant something.

I was back and forth with this for a while. Ultimately, couldn’t get all the way through.

Had an interesting premise just lacked originality where it matters.

The characters were what ruined it for me, it seems everyone wants to turn the traditional tropes upside down nowadays, but there’s a reason archetypes have stood the test of time. It could have worked if it were more subtle, but the characters come off as cliche and ‘cringey’. The dialogue is very edgy with most of the characters coming across sullen and they all seem to be the same, all fighting a fate they don’t want (sorry Jon Snow).

Superb narrator though, will look out for his name on other titles.

I tried my best

I don’t usually write reviews but this is an amazing listen!

The characters, the story, the writing, the narration. It’s just all so good! And I really love the postludes that give so much depth and back story. You really get to know the characters and they almost become like family.

If you like a good fantasy and being drawn into a story then this is perfect.

10/10

Superb Series!

This is page by page adventure and surprises - Thank you David for writing such an amazing story which I thoroughly enjoyed.
The concept is strong
The character development is strong - e.g. you find yourself liking characters that you shouldn't
The narration is really good - Derek does a good job at a female voice and making it credible
You look and think 19 hours wow that's long, but it's so good it feels like 5 minutes! He also gives you back stories at the end which give you further insight into the characters (he could have done these as flashbacks just as well)
never mind the book LOVED THIS SERIES

A real epic adventure - thank you

Well it's not great, but the narrator does a good job at bringing it to life, to the extent I'll probably buy book 2... probably.

Kinda Meh, but just engaging enough.

My god this was a heavy listen because it's insanely melodramatic. Every single character is basically the edgelord character in a TTRPG group. Everyone has a horribly tragic backstory, nobody wants to be someone important even though they're literally marked for greatness and bloody hell it's just unbearable at times.

By far the hardest audiobook I've ever listened to, but I can't give it less than 3 stars because it's considerably better than average story, even if I got basically no joy out of listening to it and won't continue the series unless someone puts a gun to my head.

It's not bad by any means, just incredibly dire but not to the point of being so grimdark it's just a comedy either.

Well written but extremely melodramatic book

I found this book by searching for the narrator, something I have not done before. I have not been disappointed. the book is very true to it's genre but it's characters are satisfyingly imperfect, while engaging, the marks are pleasingly different, the storyline never predictable.

awesome and not predictable

you might have been OK if you were little more subtle with the woke crap

absolute dribble

Finished the book but never was truly captivated. found myself having to rewind after missing sections with simply loosing interest. Had hoped for more so sadly cannot recommend.
Though I do appreciate the effort by both author and narrator

unfortunately pretty boring

The writing is wooden, the characters are cliches, and the ‘story’ is both ridiculous and mind numbingly tedious.
Do not waste a moment of your life on this rubbish.

Dire. Do not bother!

The unfummy, unbelievable, two dimensional dialogue stops me from being able to suspend disbelief and enjoy the story the way everyone hopes they can with a good fantasy novel. I've pursued it for a few hours, but can't hold on any longer.

Clumsy, awkward dialogue
