Summary

Without him, I’m a dead man, but if he knew who I was, he would kill me himself.

Miles Castillo has spent his entire life running from the crime his parents committed. He’s an alpha without a pack, and a son whose very name is poisoned. When two werewolf hunters catch him, he has to choose between a man who wants his head mounted on a wall and Cade Bartlett, the mage prince who doesn’t realize who Miles is.

The icy prince has a job for Miles, one that will keep Miles’s head on his shoulders: become Prince Cade’s consort and find out who is trying to kill him.

As Miles delves deeper into Cade’s court, he begins seeing the truth beneath Cade’s chilly exterior. The more the prince trusts him, the closer he gets to seeing under Miles’s mask as well.

What will happen when Cade realizes the secret Miles holds puts both of their lives at risk?

The slow attraction that formed between the 2 MCs

The story is captivating enough to make want to read the second book before the audible version comes out.

Great Book, but story doesn't end in this installment

Good read/listen from the start, moving to a werewolf out of water in the Mage culture story with a bit of action, some detective investigations and political intrigue. The softening of the characters to each other is so gradual and very well written, that you don't realise when they stopped hating each other.

Narration was spot on, same voice actor expertly playing a range of characters each with their own identifiable voice.

A big negative for me is that there is no resolution,it isn't exactly a cliff hanger if you want to split hairs, There is a decent plot twist ending but the book doesn't just suddenly stop in the middle of it, It is just that there is jno break in tension, so the 'ending' just leads the characters straight to the premise of the next book. If the writing is good enough you want to get the next book, I don't like these tricks to get you desperate to read on. especially not when I am staying up late to finish a book.

An interesting Start

To be honest, I knew only three things starting this book: it was written by Kai Butler, narrated by Greag Boudreaux/Tremblay and there was going to be some kind of wolf shifters and magic users based of the book cover. But that's it. I didn't read the blurb or anything else.
And it was a quite interesting start of Kai Butler's new series. I enjoyed the story and mostly the characters-I'm not quite sure about Cade thought, at least for now. The book had some good elements/tropes (like enemies-to-lovers and forced proximity) and I'm now eagerly waiting to know what happens next in Miles and Cade's story!

Can’t wait for the next one

So… shifters and mages, gargoyles and even mention of fae. Lots of intrigue and excitement, wicked villains and unexpected friends. Love both mcs and the long development of their relationship. Great world building. Bring on book 2
