About this listen

The world changed the day the rifts happened. Trolls, elves, and other races from fantasy and myth emerged into a modern world, bringing magic with them. The world governments worked to segregate these new arrivals into refugee camps, which eventually became the nation of De’Vas. A nation of paranormals.

Five years after the rifts first appeared, Asher Grayson was deported, or as he called it exiled, to De’Vas since he could use magic. Now he is trying to carve a life out for himself in District 114. His roommate and best friend is an orc, keeping his dryad boss in line is a full-time job and the local beastkin gang has it out for him. As Ash works to hone his magic and navigate this new world, he finds himself in a dangerous situation involving the darker side of De’Vas. With powerful foes after him, Ash must rely on his magic and friends to survive.

going by the description i was hoping for something a little more gritty and mature, what i got was okay, but could have done without the anime cliches of stalking a friend on their date and dangerous women having girls sleepovers like a bunch of 12 year olds.
I really dont think the Author has fully utilized the possibilities of the setting and characters yet, but what is there is enjoyable enough. Will get the next the next one only if i'm between book series though.

good but immature.

This is the first book by this author I've read/listened to and I'm very impressed by how seamlessly he weaves the narrative through the story.

He expertly uses multiple characters pov to give contrasting views of the events on the story and elegantly introduce new plot elements in a way that makes the world feel like a living place and not just setdressings for the MCs awesomeness, something that other athours in the genra do way to often.

The characters feel like real people with understandable flaws and reasonable motivations for what they do and while many of them are on the higher end of the powescale the fights and conflicts never felt predetermined or overly conveluted.

I greatly look forward to the next book by the author and hope this grows into a longrunning series!

A thrilling modern fantasy tale.

This book was so entertaining! The characters and dialogue especially are stand outs by far. Every interaction felt natural and fun, at no point was i bored when characters were talking to eachother. The book has a nice balance of slice of life, action, story building and erotica. I normally don't buy audiobooks that only have 1 book finished in a planned series, however if you have Alyssa poon as your lead narrator, im gunna try it. She knocked it out the park. I was surprised how finished this book felt with its conclusion, it being the start of a series, honestly it kinda read like a standalone. There are mentions of one or two things that im sure will come to play in the sequels, but if i was told the series was cancelled (god please no) i would still be satisfied with my experience. I will however be buying the next. The characters are so fun, i want more of them.

Honestly i only have positive things to say overall, the only negatives are two minor nitpicks. The first being the first hour or so the MC just had stuff happening to him, which i find a bit boring. The second nitpick is the ending, It felt a bit rushed, would of liked a longer breather time after everything happened, let all the characters have there moments. but overall, man, i want more. Super excited for the sequels!

Such a fun time!

Really enjoyed this silly romp with good characters and a start to the world building

A nice urban fantasy setting, and some goofy characters.
