Summary

Lawrence brings the Broken Empire series to its devastating conclusion

The path to the throne is broken – only the broken can walk it

The world is cracked and time has run through, leaving us clutching at the end days. These are the days that have waited for us all our lives. These are my days. I will stand before the Hundred and they will listen. I will take the throne no matter who stands against me, living or dead, and if I must be the last emperor then I will make of it such an ending.

This is where the wise man turns away. This is where the holy kneel and call on God. These are the last miles, my brothers. Don't look to me to save you. Run if you have the wit. Pray if you have the soul. Stand your ground if courage is yours. But don't follow me.

Follow me, and I will break your heart.

Excellent Narration

Joe Jameson brings to life every character by this great author. The story needs to be listened to as it jumps between time lines but it’s worth it.

What A Series

Sublime. Bittersweet. Powerful. These and many fit the end of one of the best Dark Novels I have ever had the pleasure.

The best is yet to come

This book and trilogy are a rare thing, a succinct trilogy in the fantasy genre. Done & dusted with no extra faff and satisfactorily concluded. I cannot stress enough how difficult this can be to find. This book and world can easily have been stretched, extra characters brought in there world fleshed out until it takes 10 books to find out what was meant to happen. This author never made that mistake. Masterfully told like the previous books and without any wasted words. There are now other books for the world and I can't speak to them but I am interested enough to have a glance but it is in no way required. That my friends is how you write a fantasy series.
The narration is perfect.
But if you're reading this review you're already two books in so let me just assure you that this book is worth it.

simply fabulous

Has Mark Lawrence taken gritty fantasy to a whole new level? with no black or white but infinite shades of grey, in my opinion, yes. Not since Joe Abercrombie's first law series have I enjoyed fantasy as much as this. Love the posibilities of the postapocalyptic medieval world so beautifully imagined here. Jorg Ancrath may not be the prince of childrens fairytales, a nice or even decent person, but by the gods his story is compelling reading. fabulous casting of the narrater too, perfect for Jorg and a great job with everyone else, artfully read throughout. can't wait for more adventures through the broken empire.

Simply great

I really dont like giving all 5ves but in this case I have no choice. An epic story (in all three books) with a main character that is a fantastic rendition of an anti-hero. anti climaxes mixed with great twists. A fantastic reader who manages to pull you into the world. These books are some of the best fantacy I have read in a while and makes me want more.

Earth shatteringly good.

If u like Michael Sullivan or robin hobb or Brandon Sanderson then u are in for a real treat u will prob finish the entire series in less than a week and sacrifice a lot of sleep
This is one of those for fantasy lovers that when u are finished u wish u could delete your memory of it and listen to the whole thing with fresh ears again and again
I will be watching this author very closely for new works
I hear there is another trilogy and it has a lot of the characters so that's my next listen
This and the seven isles series are the best listens I've had so far this year and I don't normally take the time to review although I have over 100 fantasy titles in my audio library

Gripping storyline

Although it took some time to get going, I thoroughly enjoyed it. Very well read by Joe Jameson. What a talent. My only gripe, and I hesitate to use the word, is that the final battle wasn't the epic contest it could've been, considering everything that led up to it.

Other than that, great series.
