About this listen

Brought to you by Penguin.

Read by award-winning narrator Jeff Harding.

**NOW A MAJOR PRIME TV SERIES STARRING ALAN RITCHSON**

Jack Reacher, adrift in the hellish heat of a Texas summer.

Looking for a lift through the vast empty landscape. A woman stops, and offers a ride. She is young, rich and beautiful.

But her husband's in jail. When he comes out, he's going to kill her.

Her family's hostile, she can't trust the cops, and the lawyers won't help. She is entangled in a web of lies and prejudice, hatred and murder.

Jack Reacher never could resist a lady in distress.

Although the Jack Reacher novels can be listened to in any order, Echo Burning is 5th in the series.

"Complete with crackling fast dialogue, an edgy ambivalent plot, and the capacity to make his readers turn the page, this feels like Child's breakthrough book into the mega-sellers. He is that good." (Daily Mail)

‘Jeff Harding’s [...] narration captures Reacher’s character perfectly [...] you have to savour every minute.’ The Sunday Times

Any additional comments?

Reacher is becoming an addiction. Tense and thrilling, I was almost feeling sorry for those characters that chose to mess with the 'special investigator'.

Captivating

Enjoyed the story took a while to get going. Who said that is a bad thing.

Good and slow burning

At last we encounter the thinking Reacher, certainly he can still break arms and eliminate those who need to be eliminated, however, this story shows us a different and more cerebra hero. Lee Child has developed his character to negotiate strategies that are very complex and, at times, unbelievable though in the context of the story, necessary. The characterisation through the voice of Jeff Harding, is as usual, brilliant. Without our favourite reader Reacher would be a pale ersatz of the real man.

Reacher at his thinking best

Would you listen to Echo Burning again? Why?

No - I've read it in paper form and now listened. It's a reasonably inventive story with just about enough action but not quite a page-turner.

How would you have changed the story to make it more enjoyable?

At no point do we feel that Reacher is in serious trouble - he spends a lot of the book helping people who are but it would have been better for him to have faced some serious adversaries a bit earlier.

Which character – as performed by Jeff Harding – was your favourite?

Reacher. The others were fine although poor little Ellie was just a caricature.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Not quite.

Run of the Mill Reacher

Reacher at his best again. A slow build up to a great crescendo of activity. The master of who dunnits.

Yet another belting, twisting tale.

This was probably the most enjoyable Reacher book I’ve read or listened to so far. The plot moves along nicely with some surprises that even catch Reacher unawares. The narrator is excellent throughout.

Gripping Reacher

Always brilliant, full of interesting background details that set the many scenes that make the story twist and turn until the very end.
