Amazing to finally consume the text of this story after being a long time super fan of the movie, the Thirteenth Warrior. Exceptionally difficult to get a print copy so an audio copy was the next best and it made made car journey's fly by. Great narration, great story and perfect for a history or movies fan.

Loved it. It's like the book version of a docudrama. I loved the way the story unfolds and gives us plausible explanations for aspects of Norse mythology and the Beowulf legend. Will be looking out for Simon Vance narrations as he had me hooked.

A magical book that really shouldn't work (historical Beowulf as told by an Arab eyewitness), but somehow flows beautifully, academic footnotes and all.

This book was highly enjoyable, quite simply a great read. Admittedly the start is a little slow however once clicked into the writing style of curious detailing, you will be thrown into the world of the Norse! Highly recommended.

Strangely compelling but this is not a story in a normal Michael Crichton sense. Ancient texts recast as fiction

Not at all what I was expecting

Spoiler Alert —- Having recently re-watched the film “13th Warrior” I was curious to read (listen in this case) the book on which it was based. If you enjoyed the film, you will enjoy the book. The plot is a retelling of the tale of Beowulf but through the eyes of an observer at the time. The narrative is along the lines of a telling of the tale uncovered by scholars in an ancient Arab text. By the inclusion of numerous asides, footnotes and a comprehensive bibliography, the illusion of the tale being factual is held through to the end. Only in Michael Crichton’s end notes does he explain the work is indeed almost entirely a fiction. A good listen.
