I was drawn to the.central character of a sick man, a doctor, facing ageing and death. This beautifully written novel gave me so much more. Descriptive writing that had me standing alongside Ben. As a child among apple orchards in the western U.S.. As an army recruit and alpine soldier in Italy in WW2, and the incident that made him decide to be a doctor. A loving marriage. And his journey of despair after his wife’s death and cancer diagnosis. Travelling with him as the despair morphed. into a journey of redemption, acceptance and peace.
Beautifully narrated.
I thoroughly recommend this unabridged audible version of East of the Mountains.

Any additional comments?

Don't be put off by the subject. It is about a man facing death but full of positive spirit and more about life than death. Other than the shocking beginning, the book is never depressing. I preferred Snow on Cedars, by the same author narrator pair, but this is still a fine novel and deserves 5 stars.
